In the past if I checked the subtitle English (forced only) box(s) in Makemkv, once ripping was complete I could open my .mkv in Mediainfo to see if there was a text stream (subtitle stream) in the file. Then, using Handbrake to transcode the file to reduce it's size, I could add the subtitle track choosing Foreign audio scan with the Forced Only box checked. This process would always create a transcoded file that had english subtitles only when a foreign language was being spoken.
I recently backed up my copy of Hands of Stone Blu-Ray and checked the subtitle English (forced only) box. Mediainfo reported no text stream in the .mkv file in spite of there being a considerable amount of spanish language audio in the movie. I had to import a .srt forced only subtitle file to get subtitles when transcoding with Handbrake.
Any ideas why Makemkv is not adding forced only subtitles to my .mkv files? Do I need to make different choices in Makemkv to get English forced only subtitles in my rip?
I am not getting subtitle streams from Makemkv
Re: I am not getting subtitle streams from Makemkv
Probably because there are no forced subtitles in your titles.
"Forced only" will create a track with ONLY subtitles that are TAGGED as "forced". The majority of BD (and DVDs) use a separate track for "forced" subtitles, and they are not tagged as such.
And, BDs use graphic PGS format subtitles, which are NOT text, so anything looking for text subtitles will say there are none present.

Re: I am not getting subtitle streams from Makemkv
I'm having the same problem even on some of the titles I am having to re-rip.
Forced subtitles worked then, now they are not working.
Using MakeMKV, the selection for main subtitle is listed, and then the secondary selection of Forced is listed.
Normally I can select the Forced only selection and it rips it out, now it doesn't even do that anymore.
Just finished re-repping Star Wars Episodes I thru VI and had one hell of a time getting the forced subtitle to rip, where as before I never had a problem with just selecting the Forced one and getting the right track.
Something has changed.

Re: I am not getting subtitle streams from Makemkv
Don't think so, no problem at all with subtitles. Even if they are in extra tracks or with the "Forced flagged" subtitles.
The process with only selecting the "Forced" track part is tricky. As Woodstock told, this is only working if the subtitle track has "Forced flagged" single subtitles in it. If there are none with this flag set, the forced subtitle track (created by MakeMKV, it does not exists on the Blu-ray) is removed.
Good Luck

Re: I am not getting subtitle streams from Makemkv
Let me put it like this, blu-rays I have ripped in the past using this method, ripped the forced track. Now on the exact same blu-ray it is not working now.Grauhaar wrote: ↑Fri Aug 16, 2019 5:56 pmThe process with only selecting the "Forced" track part is tricky. Please explain how the same blu-ray can do it one time, and not the next time.
Your getting all technical about how its done, but not explaining why it's not working now like it did before.
Like I mentioned in my other post, something within the subtitle arena has changed.
Re: I am not getting subtitle streams from Makemkv
Just ripped some Blu-rays with the "Forced Flag" set in the subtitles (extra forced subtitle track is cerated) and it works without any problems.
To verify your problem select both checkboxes, make the rip and after this extract the subtitle track(s) with mkvextract or other tools. Then use the Java Tool "BD Sup2Sub" to see what is inside the subtitle track(s). The tools shows and counts the subtitles and writes out the number of "forced flagged" subtitles in the track.

Re: I am not getting subtitle streams from Makemkv
Which blu-rays did you rip? Did you select FORCED only, or BOTH, main and forced?
I know that ripping 2012 using the forced only selection, the forced subtitle doesn't show.
If I rip both the main and forced subtitle for the selected language, (which I didn't have to do before), it shows up on the movie, but so does the commentator's BS.
Before, the forced only selection would read the main subtitle and rip out the forced tagged subtitle without having the whole main subtitle being ripped.
So now, if you have to rip BOTH of them, why even bother having a forced selection in the first place?
It's not working like it states it should here: http://www.makemkv.com/faq/item/10
All this is good, but making way more difficult than it should be, or used to be.Grauhaar wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2019 2:42 pmTo verify your problem select both checkboxes, make the rip and after this extract the subtitle track(s) with mkvextract or other tools. Re: I am not getting subtitle streams from Makemkv
I tested both variants, but the "Forced only" works also as expected.
2012? Respect, that you still know what disc and what tracks are selected for the rip .....I know that ripping 2012 using the forced only selection, the forced subtitle doesn't show.
Did you understood what I wrote? It's only to validate if there are forced flagged subtitles in the ripped "main" track for the "Forced" track separation. All this is good, but making way more difficult than it should be, or used to be.
It's your decision to make some tests to come closer to the cause of your problem.
Good Luck
