ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.02 and problem reading DVDs

Post by thetoad »

I recently replaced my old bluray drive with this asus drive I had sitting in my closet (cheap rebate purchase a long time ago before anyone was thinking UHD ripping).

However, it is very inconsistent as a dvd ripper (haven't even tried blurays yet). It seems to get itself "stuck" in that it will repeatedly have some sort of sense error but can retry and then read. after enough of doing this, it sometimes gets "unstuck" and then can continue to read fine without retries for an extended period of time.

any clue what's going on? I know this isn't a UHD issue (or even makemkv specific), but its really annoying me for making full disc DVD rips.

If you're getting sense errors, that's hardware.

Are you running in DEBUG LOGGING mode? What kind of errors are you getting?

I can't even open discs in makemkv (i can open them in dvd decrypter after many retries and sometimes it resets itself and starts working without any retries)

though apparently after my last reboot and attempt to use makemkv, nothing is working with it right now.

and after letting dvd decrypter go after it for bit is now reading fine again. so confused.

There are Windows 10 security settings that are definitely screwing with makeMKV working properly on my systems. When i find exactly which one it is I'll post it here.

the issue here isn't a makemkv issue, its a hardware issue. where the hardware gets into a funky state.

Interesting, I've no idea what my issue is then but I've got 3 Windows 10 Pro machines where makeMKV reports "no usable optical drive found" immediately when the program is run. Windows of course sees the drive just fine.
I'm currently limping by with a pair of Macbook Pros, high sierra on one and something else on the other. The Mac version of makeMKV is working fine thank God and until Tuesday Windows was also good but not any longer.

Stupid question....have you tried running MakeMKV in admin mode? I've seen that issue in Win 10 before where the drives wouldn't show up unless MakeMKV was started as admin.

turns out my issue was a bad sata cable. make me wonder if I didn't need to replace it in the first place. oh well.

I want to add a "me too" to this, sort of.

My BW-16D1HT with 3.02 rips BluRay and UHD just fine, but won't even recognize a DVD.

Does this indicate it's a DVD laser issue?

An older DVD drive rips the same DVDs just fine, so I've got backup plans. Just annoying.

Thoughts?

Thanks, I missed that thread somehow.

It's funny this UHD drive basically won't read ANY DVD. My Sony BluRay drive usually reads DVDs fine, but read both of the discs I tried today with errors.

My red-laser Memorex USB-powered DVD-only drive worked perfectly.

Sounds like the long-term solution is to just use the red-laser DVD drives for DVDs.

Thanks for the tip!

I've ripped 10s to hundreds of DVDs with this drive. Now, its not a particularly fast DVD ripper, but it rips them without any issues/
