UHD drives

Just wanted to say that I bought a ready-to-go drive with enclosure from johngotti (Alex) and it was just that - ready to go. Plugged it into a USB 3.0 port on my computer and started ripping. I also bought some discs from him at a really good price.

He answered a bunch of my questions and helped me pick out what I needed. Great guy.

So if you want to get started and skip the headaches, I would suggest that Alex is your man.

The WH16NS60 is an "official" UHD drive and yes, in my opinion, it is the best drive to have, when used with MakeMKV. I have never had any UHD reading issues when using my WH16NS60.

I already have the Asus which I plan to downgrade to 3.02

I was thinking of getting the official NS60 but since it can't be used with AnydvdHD without downgrading the fw then I have to shelve it

Yes - Supported by both programs.
Yes - Can burn BD, DVD and CD discs no problem as is standard ASUS firmware for that model drive.
Yes - There is sleep bug. But, honestly this is not really an issue.

LG WH16NS60 1.00
Yes - MakeMKV support. NO - AnyDVD support.
Yes - Can burn BD, DVD and CD discs no problem as is standard LG firmware for that model drive.
No - Sleep bug as this is an official UHD drive.

I have done a lot of research and I agree, the WH16NS60 is currently the best drive to get for MakeMKV. Easy to buy (every reseller has it), easy to patch, no sleep bug, reliable.

I have read some of the last pages in this thread and it looks like ASUS BW-16D1HT and LG WH16NS60 is the way to go for ripping all of my bluray to my plex library.

Asus is available in my local shop for 100$ while the LG I have to buy of Amazon for a total of 150$ including shipping. Is it worth spending 50$ extra for the LG?

From the list of recommended drives I see that I can also get the following drives at my local shop.

- Asus BC-12D2HT for 80$
- LG BH16NS55 for 130$

Installed the ASUS BW-16D1HT into the Vantec enclosure today and confirmed drive was using 3.03 fw.
flashed the fw to 3.02 and it was successfully converted to a friendly drive within 10 seconds!

Installed the evaluation copy of AnyDvdHD and ripping Hacksaw Ridge UHD to iso now......
Next, I will use Makemkv to rip.

Initially, I had wanted to purchase a friendly drive from 1 of the sellers here. I thought it will be tough for a noob like me but after reading the thread here, I decided to attempt it. If I brick the drive then it will leave me no choice but to buy from the sellers here.

Anyway, it's looking good so far and the iso rip is expected to complete in 1hr 20mins

btw, is 3.02 the best friendly fw available for the Asus?
I might attempt to cross-flash the Asus next ..

Going to do a file backup using makemkv to copy the bdmw folder to my NAS to see how long it takes

I am still ripping using anydvdhd
after this I will start on makemkv and I will decide which one to get

Unless you see it has fw 3.xx and not 1.xx
