Can't rip (or even read) "The Hunger Games: Catching fire"

Post by VarHD » Sun Jun 09, 2019 7:48 pm

For some reason my drive can't read the 4K disc with "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and I wonder if anyone here could help me out or knows why.

It fails right away during the initial process of identifying the disc so I enter the disc, see the spinning animation in MakeMKV and normally once it reads the disc, I click on this icon and then it reads the contents, but with this movie, I can't even click on it because it keeps spinning and fails to even identify the disc.

I'm using MakeMKV v1.14.4 and an ASUS BW-16D1HT drive which initially came with firmware version 3.03, but I downgraded it to 3.02 right-away using the tool provided on this forum. I had no issues with other discs so far.

Here's the log:

Before someone says "the disc is scratched" - it's not. It's brand new in pristine condition, not a spec of dust on it, not even the tiniest scratch. Does anyone have a clue why this is happening, or better - how to solve it? BTW, I had no issues ripping the other 3 Hunger Games movies from the same collection.

No one's going to say the disc is scratched, but, they are going to tell you to clean the disc. I don't care how pristine "it looks" or if it came out of the package brand new and into the drive, it still needs to be cleaned. Barring that, the ASUS drive does not like certain discs. You can try to upgrade it to MK 3.10 as that has a better track record reading triple layer discs, but, in some cases, some discs just can't be read in some drives. Which is why I own both an LG NS60 and the BW-16D1HT.

"I don't care how pristine "it looks" or if it came out of the package brand new and into the drive, it still needs to be cleaned."
I looked at the disc, I didn't just put it in and assumed that it's clean, I see that it's clean :) But fine, I get it, there could be some microscopic dirt so I cleaned the clean disc now... unfortunately made no difference.

Thanks for the tip with the 3.10 MK firmware, I'll try it later after I finish ripping the rest of my collection just in case something would go wrong for whatever reason. I hope this will help, if not I'll get the other drive you've mentioned.

Anything that causes the blue laser to not focus well on the microscopic pits in the disk can cause read errors.

Modern disks are shipped in cases that have chemical treatments that can transfer to the disk. If you look at the disk itself, you will see a nice, shiny reflection. But, if you take a damp, soft cloth and wipe a portion of the disk, the haze can "jump out" at you.

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15055#p53448

The picture in that message was taken of the case a disk that needed cleaning was in. I tried to get a picture of the hazy section of the disk, but my camera would only focus on the reflected image, and the streak of clean "disappeared".

"I looked at the disc"....unless it was with a microscope that's useless and doesn't mean anything. As woodstock said, there's an invisible film on the disc that makes certain drives not read discs. The ASUS is quite susceptible to this issue. I ALWAYS clean my discs right out of the package with a microfiber cloth. I've only had a couple that still couldn't be read and one of them was a disc it did initially read when I first got it but couldn't after it sat in the box for 8 months. The disc quality sucks on these things. The packaging on these things suck even worse.

SamuriHL is right, the 4K disc quality is poor. Had a 4K UHD Coco movie, the disc would not rip after the first and second cleaning of the disc. Then after the third cleaning, finally the 4K disc ripped successfully. I guess certain 4K discs are unpredictable and “sensitive”.

I know you're often dealing here with people who truly can't differentiate a clean disc from a dirty one, but I can. Every time someone asked me to borrow them a movie, I'd ask them to bring me one of their cleanest discs to prove that they can handle them and so far everyone failed. I've yet to meet one person who has truly clean discs or even is able to tell that they're not clean, or knows how to look, what lights to use, what angles etc.

I also experienced what you've described with 2 DVDs - one came in a case that looked like the one on the photo with those weird stains that also transferred to the disc and another developed a haze after sitting in a box, but in both cases I could clearly and easily see it. Maybe it's a super-power, maybe I'm... SuperDiscMan with laser vision ;)

But seriously, I did clean it nonetheless... what a pain. Even with the softest and cleanest cloth made for cleaning lenses, if you drag the tiniest speck of dust across the surface, it can create a tiny smudge and if you wipe it out, you can create another one and so on. After an hour I managed to bring the disc back to a state where it didn't had even one micro-smudge on it - made no difference, drive still can't read it.

I still have 50+ discs to go through and then I'll check the other firmware and let you know if it helps, but in the meantime, I'm curious about the last line in the log I provided which says:

Code: Select all

LIBMKV_TRACE: UDF mount: disc not properly formatted(bad VDS)
Is this a standard message you always see when the disc can't be read or is there really something wrong with the formatting? If it's simply just a bad disc (maybe from some bad master?) then of course nothing will help and I'd have to re-buy it anyway. Let me know if you know what this error message means.

I will reiterate what I said. If cleaning does not fix it, then it's very probable a disc that the ASUS simply doesn't like reading. I've got plenty of them in the past week or so that I've read before in the drive and now won't read a few months later. You can try updating the firmware. It's not guaranteed to fix anything. Some drive/disc combinations just don't play nice together.

No idea on the error. Someone else will have to respond to that.

I finally finished ripping everything. Only had an issue with this one disc. I have now upgraded the firmware to 3.10 MK and... no luck so I'll either need the other drive or it's really just a bad disc. Unfortunately, I don't have a "real" Blu-ray player to verify if the disc is faulty or not.

@SamuriHL, when you've mentioned LG NS60, are you talking about the WH16NS60? For some reason I can't find it in my country, it's not even on LG's European websites. Even on eBay it's only sold by people from the US at more than twice the price of the ASUS. Has it been replaced by some newer model?

Yea, that's the drive. Amazon UK has it listed. It's an official UHD drive so it's definitely more money than most of the friendly drives.

One thing you could try before buying a new drive, and I'll caveat this by saying I've NOT done this so I don't know if it'll help, is to cross flash the NS60 firmware to the ASUS drive and see if that makes any difference. I'm betting it won't because I suspect it's the calibration data that makes the real difference but you can always flash back to the ASUS MK 3.10 if it doesn't help.

Indeed, it's on Amazon... at almost 4 times the price of ASUS, that's insane. I guess it's 25 GBP for the drive and 200 GBP for the official UHD licensing ;)

Honestly, I'm not willing to pay that price, at least not yet. I just tried to crossflash the LG NS60 1.0 FW, but that didn't help either. My next step will be to buy a different edition of this disc/movie, it's something I have to try first, it would suck if I'd buy an expensive drive only to find out it's actually a bad disc.

One more question - does the fact that the LG drive seems to read more discs come from it being official and not just "UHD friendly" or is it because LG simply uses different (better?) hardware, different calibration etc.? I'm asking because there are other LG drives on the "friendly" list which are way cheaper so if it's a case of LG drive being better at reading some discs, I'd rather get one of those.

I would also try to get the disc replaced just to be sure. I think that's absolutely the right thing to do FIRST.

I don't really know the answer to your question, though. My personal belief is that I think it comes down to calibration. Other than the AACS 2.0 hardware support, the LG official drives are using the same mediatek chip as the friendly drives so I can't believe it's hardware. I could very well be wrong. Maybe they use a different laser head or something I don't know. I can tell you that I did a test a few months back and I was able to flash the calibration data from my ASUS drive onto my LG (keeping the LG's encryption data) and it allowed me to write to BD's just fine (a problem some of us had when cross flashing the LG drive with the ASUS firmware to make it friendly). I suspect going the other way would likely work but I don't know if it'd help in reading discs and is a MAJOR pain in the ass to do. And getting it wrong could easily brick the drive. It's not a simple matter of flashing with a WIndows flasher. It's not even as simple as using dosflash and the data mover tool. The firmware has to be manually prepared to keep the encryption data from the current drive with calibration data from another, and THEN flashed using dosflash. It's not something I recommend. That being said, an LG friendly drive like the NS50 or NS55 could be the way to go for those discs. I just don't have any experience with them.

The saga continues. I ordered a new disc on eBay which is an Australian import. Unfortunately, it won't work either, but, it behaves a bit differently.

Sometimes it will generate similar error codes to what I've posted originally, but unlike the previous disc, it will only mention 3 sectors it can't read instead of a dozen. Other times, it won't generate any errors and will kind-of... almost mount, but not really. I mean the spinning disc animation will stop and no longer spin, but instead of letting me click on it to proceed, it's not clickable and on the right side, even though it detects the number of layers and the size (91.29 GB), it doesn't recognize the disc, I mean... doesn't identify it as a movie, just as some data disc:

It's a disc, it has 3 layers, but... no idea what it is?

Ironically, when I re-tried to mount the old disc after the new one, it sometimes also does the "half-mounting" (detects the disc, but not the content).

I'd prefer not to try to do the manual flashing you've mentioned (calibration data without encryption data) so I guess my next step would be to buy an LG drive, preferably a "friendly" one given the significantly lower price.

BTW, I wonder, does anyone reading this have this disc and if so - did you manage to rip it? Is this a known "problematic" disc/movie with some funky special copy protection?

It's DEFINITELY not a copy protection issue. It IS, however, a triple layer disc which are notoriously a pain in the ass to read for many drives. The ASUS drive, even with the improved MK 3.10 firmware, has issues reading certain triple layer discs. It really is a fantastic drive for most discs, but, occasionally it just refuses. I hope your idea of getting an LG friendly drive works. It's one of the reasons I hedged my bets with the NS60 official drive. I've never had a disc that couldn't be read in either of my drives. I upgraded these on VUDU when they had a sale so I never got the UHD's for them.

I'm not sure how much knowledge you (or anyone reading this) has about the BD manufacturing process, but in case you know a lot about it, do you have any idea why some triple layer discs are problematic?

I'm just asking out of curiosity. Logically, I would think that if a drive has issues with 3-layered discs, it would have an issue with all of them and I would understand that, but I wonder what's the reason why only some of them can't be read? For example, if I had data from, let's say, 10 000 people who have a disc that can't be read by a certain drive that otherwise has no issues reading other discs, would I find a pattern such as - all the problematic discs were made at the same facility or they're all almost at full capacity (for a 3-layer disc) or would I get a rather small list of specific movies indicating that this is linked only to certain releases (maybe from the same studio)?

I just can't wrap my head around what makes some of them "special" and the curiosity kills me ;)
