Heads up - Support for LG UHD drives

The first thing I tried was to test the drives in MakeMKV. The flashed, flaky-drive was ... flaky, so no info of any value there. Then I re-tried my working drive (not flashed) -- "retried" because, before all this, I tried MakeMKV and it didn't work on the 4k disc. My good drive always could read the 4k directory ..

.. but it couldn't do anything else. Thinking it need help, I started looking into friendly & unfriendly drives and firmwares, and such.

Then after all the firmware info and testing on the flaky drive, I tried my good drive in DVDFab ..

.. and it worked perfect. I saved a disc "chapter" and can play it fine on MediaPlayerClassic. By "fine" I mean sluggish on this laptop.

In my testing the 2 drives in MakeMKV, I noted it's information ..

.. but must've deleted the log file. So I just ran it again to get the "debug log" ..

You don't have libredrive enabled a UHD official drive won't work without it

So what do you make of this?

Ok, Please go into Preferences in MakeMKV and make sure that 'enable to contact webserver for updates' is checked. Restart MakeMKV and insert UHD disc and start backup to Folder.

MakeMKV should now contact the server and download LibreDrive and also the latest UHD Volume keys.

Hopefully this solves your problem. It look as though your firmware is UHD compatible.

That means the BU50N (0420) drive is UHD friendly right out of the box? Excellent!

Would that also mean the firmware 0420 is the most up-to-date firmware (so far) for the BU50N and possibly the BU40N (is it something MakeMKV could use)?

It could prove useful. If you would like to help, are you able to extract the firmware using DOSFLASH?

I checked my system but no SATA - IDE mode in the BIOS. So the laptop is useless for that task. I'll have to wait until I dig out my old system, determine if it has the IDE mode, figure out a way to connect my laptop drive to it (probably an external adapter?), and go from there.

Any instructions here for a best and most reliable way to go about the whole procedure? It may be some time before I can get into it, but, yes, I'd send you whatever I get from it for your research.

Since people rarely search for this stuff, the actual requirement is:

"A motherboard having SATA controller set as IDE (not AHCI !!!)".

My interpretation is that if the BIOS offers no 'AHCI' mode, you're probably good (older BIOS).

Suggestion... the procedure offers both DOS & Windows options. Pick one & focus on ONLY those details. Also, while use of a hex editor is mentioned, there is a 'data mover' tool available which performs this task for you... MUCH easier. Read carefully.

Did you have to flash downgrade the firmware on your drive to get it to recognize 4K discs? I just purchased an Archgon HD 81075 drive and am wondering if I need to flash it once I get it?

If it has 1.01 or higher, then yes, you will need to flash it back to 1.00.

I'm a newb mostly. Used to burn discs a long time ago. I wanted to get back into it with UHD. I purchased a LG BU40N with firmware 1.03. It would burn blu-rays but not UHD using UHD Copy from DVD Fab. Seems mkv is the thing now so I'll have to use it once I get up and running. My problem is that I went on YouTube to figure out how to downgrade from BU40N 1.03 to 1.0 and I got tossed around from YT to mkv threads to CDRinfo.rl threads and got all confused as different people are saying different things.

I am using a Vantec USB3.0 SATA Enclosure. My PC is a laptop, Dell XPS 9350. I also have a MacBook Pro but didn't plan on using it with this drive. I read that the BU40N would need to been sidegraded before downgraded. I read I needed LG 1.04MK but couldn't find it in the MKV firmware folder. Read a comment saying "this" was it. I downloaded a firmware and finally it installed successfully. But my drive is now identifying as an LG BH16NS55 1.04. Then I tried to downgrade to BU40N 1.0 and it wouldn't work. So I downgraded to BH16NS55 1.02 which worked but still it won't go down to BU40N 1.0. The drive won't eject but does flash. It's recognized. I went back to BH16NS55 1.04. That's where I'm at. Can't figure out what to do. I've reached out an offered to pay to get it fixed remotely but I'm waiting with discs that I need to get done. Can anyone recommend anything? I've read Dos Flash only works on 32 bit and IDE mode which I don't have access to. Maybe there is some way to fix it using my MacBook Pro? Appreciate any help I could get. Thanks in advance!

Pretty sure that thread contains the firmware you need, which is also 1.03.
