getting set up for UHD ripping

Hello, I have a limited understanding of disk drive technology and want to make sure I'm doing this right. I have gathered that I need a UHD-friendly blu ray drive, I'm looking at the ASUS BW-16D1HT since it seems to be popular. I will need some way to plug this into my laptop, is there a specific speed of SATA adapter or enclosure I will need to get or should it work no matter what? Is there a guide on here to getting the right firmware for UHD if my drive ships with the wrong firmware? Is the process of using MakeMKV going to be the same as for a regular blu ray or are there extra steps I will need to keep in mind? Big thanks to anyone who can help me with this so I can focus on ripping and editing movies.

only get a usb to sata adapter that says it is compatible with optical drives most that dont say they are dont work because they support the bare minimum of atapi commands to support only hdds and ssds

the enclosures above allow flashing some do not

your drive will ship with the wrong firmware if it is new make sure it has firmware 3.00+ if you get the asus and all drives need to be built 2015+ to work or you can brick it.

the process is the same as regular bluray disks as UHD disks

Billy is highly recommended if you want to purchase a drive all ready to go!

Also, another (cheaper) option for connection is to use a SATA to USB 3.0 powered cable adapter. I personally use a Unitek Y-1034 SATA / USB Cable Adapter and have never had an issue with it. This adapter also enables flashing without issue. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Unitek-USB- ... SwXYtY0B8H

Essentially, any brand new drive purchased from stores these days will come with the 'UHD Unfriendly' firmware. However, if you purchase a new drive and want to have a go at flashing it yourself (it is very easy!)

1. Grab the modified ASUS fw changer + firmware from viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18933 The first post has the links and instructions.

2. Grab the MK firmware from viewtopic.php?f=19&t=19113 if you want to use Mike's MK firmware.

3. Flash your drive. It should take approx 30 seconds and you are done!
