DVDs not ripping

#1 Post by Sheldor » Sun Dec 23, 2018 1:08 am

Hello all,

I am having an issue today where my DVDs are not ripping. I was able to rip 1 movie in the normal 15 min then when I tried the second one it sees its there, I can select the chapter/movie I want to rip then after that nothing. I have tried it on 2 different DVD drives and 2 different computers. I have upgraded to the most recent version and still no luck. I have attached a screen shot of what its showing.

Do you have debug logging enabled? (FAQ link in my signature)

Are you getting any error messages?

I am getting this but it goes on for a long time. I left it running over night and the movie finally finished after 5 hours.

Does it make a difference in ripping time if you do NOT select the closed caption track?

No. The movie ended up ripping. I let it sit over night it took 5 hours now every movie i put in its only taking 15-25min. It must have just been that movie. "300". I have never had this issue before.

I've had the same issue on a few discs. For the hell of it, I decided I'd try out an older version to see if it produced the same result. Turns out, it didn't...it actually ripped flawlessly with an older version vs. the current one. I used 1.12.3 and had more success ripping DVDs (and even some Blu-rays) with that than I did 1.14.2. I guess newer isn't always better.

I am also having this issue today. Have been ripping various DVDs and BluRays since last night, today I am stuck on Casablanca. I will just let this run all day and see if it finishes eventually in several hours. Otherwise I may try downgrading to 1.12.3 as nocomments87 suggested.

I was having similar issues today as well. Version 1.14.2 would not open any DVDs I tried. I emailed a log file on that. I downgraded to 1.14.1 and it would open the discs and some would rip okay and some it was telling me it was going to take several hours to finish. First time I ran into the issue I used the old DVD Decrypter to rip and it ripped in a normal 30ish minute time. Next one I did with MakeMKV and it was fine then the one after that was slow again. I downgraded to 1.12.3 for that one and it is back to normal pace. The 1.14.x versions seem to be having trouble with DVDs compared to the 1.12.x versions for some reason. All issues on Harry Potter movies today. I also Tried Batman begins as a test when the latest version wouldn't read anything.

I have had the same problem consistently. Maybe three of the last 12 or so DVDs I tried to rip would rip properly, and the usual symptom was the spinning with no progress being made. I'm wondering if this is due to something changing in Windows, because I haven't had this problem in the past. I did try uninstall/reinstall with no improvement. How do you downgrade to 1.12.3? I can't find an install for that.

You can download the old versions here https://makemkv.com/download/old/
Is your optical drive connected internally or are you using a slim USB powered drive?

Thanks for that link. I'll try it.

My optical drives are internal. Today I've tried two different computers, two different DVDs, same result. In the recent past I've tried several other DVDs and had maybe 20% work. This is a definite change from prior to . . . something . . . because I've never had this many disks fail to rip.
