Knowing WHAT SCSI errors you are getting is key to figuring out WHY you're getting them.

Do you have debug logging turned on (FAQ link in my signature) ? Please post the log from trying to rip BIG as part of your reply.

Two possibilities.

Given the errors, you're probably using a USB-powered drive. It is quite common for USB drives to run out of power (not enough power from the port they're plugged into) when the ripping speed gets too fast. The drive shuts down, then the operating system says it can't talk to it, the drive resets and things look normal. Ultimate fix is to give the drive enough power (use a powered USB hub, sometimes a double-headed cable is required), but you can also slow the rip down by writing to a USB flash drive instead of the hard disk. Just make sure the flash drive is big enough and formatted either in ExFAT (for Mac) or NTFS (Windows).

The other way these errors can pop up is with a drive that "tries too hard" to recover data. Rather than say, "There is an error here", the drive just keeps on trying to read the disk, ignoring the operating system, when then gives error messages that the drive isn't responding. Often just cleaning the disk takes care of these issues.

BIG is rippable - I've done it.

Hi Woodstock,

Thanks for getting back to me. I have tried cleaning the disk. I haven't checked to see if it is playable for a while. Because I have ripped so many others I would not have thought it was a power problem, but that is what I was reading into it also. I tried slowing it down by plugging it into a usb 2.0 with no luck. I can try getting a powered hub and cleaning the disk again.

Thanks again

If it's the USB power, plugging into USB2 isn't going to fix the issue. USB2 is more than fast enough to absorb the data coming off the optical disk at the maximum speed of the drive... but the drive takes more power the faster it spins.

Depending on the drive, the port(s) you plug into must be able to supply a "full unit" of USB power, i.e., .5 amp at 5v. Some drives need "2 units", 1.0 amp at 5v, which means plugging into two fully-powered USB ports. A typical un-powered hub takes 1 unit of USB power and splits it among the attached devices. That's fine when the device doesn't need a lot of power, but not when it does.

Using a USB flash drive slows the rate that the data can be written, which will force the drive to slow down, and keeps it within the available power budget.
