My process of ripping DVDs is to image it (via ddrescue) and then either use makemkv directly (it can decrypt the contents) or use dvddecrypter to decrypt the contents and use dvdfab to create a file system backup.
For B5 Crusade, 2 of the episodes were ripped (via makemkv method above) missing the first chapter. When I then ran it through dvdfab and had makemkv open the file system backup, makemkv complained about it being a dvdfab backup, BUT it saw the episode in full not chapter truncated and I was able to get a good copy of the episode.
thoughts?
I've deleted my ddrescue backup, but can make another copy if so desired.

Re: Problem with Babylon 5 Crusade DVDs
When I recently re-ripped my B5-related disks, MakeMKV had no issue with any of them, including the Crusade disks.
Have you tried ripping directly from the optical media?

Re: Problem with Babylon 5 Crusade DVDs
I'll try sticking them in, just more complicated (copying is slow, so I have multiple computers doing that over night) but makemkv can process the whole iso in a minute or 2 which makes it easy to iterate through.
Re: Problem with Babylon 5 Crusade DVDs
hmm, looks fine when I put the disc in and used makemkv on that machine, trying it by rebuilding the iso with ddrescue and seeing if I can duplicate it.
Re: Problem with Babylon 5 Crusade DVDs
and it did it again when read from image. anyone have an idea why this would happen? software deCSS not working correctly?
Re: Problem with Babylon 5 Crusade DVDs
Are you getting any error messages? As I said, the disks in this series are normally readable. Without more information, guesses are all that is left.

Re: Problem with Babylon 5 Crusade DVDs
I don't have an answer to your problem but I am not understanding your process. Whenever I rip DVD's, Blu-Rays, or UHD's, I just use MakeMKV for the whole thing. This has always worked perfectly for me with no other programs. Why are you using three or four programs to do what one will do. I am probably missing something here but I am just wondering why. Thanks.
Re: Problem with Babylon 5 Crusade DVDs
no errors, it just detects the title as 5 "cells" instead of 6 and when I rip it, its missing the opening chapter. But when I have it open the dvdfab reauthored title, it works fine.
1) Because I'm not only making mkv's, I'm also storing the decrypted file structurerivey wrote: ↑Tue Jan 29, 2019 1:37 amI don't have an answer to your problem but I am not understanding your process. 2) not all DVD or Blurays are perfect, ddrescue enables me to recover scratched DVDs and blurays with relative ease. i.e. it can continually retry a bad portion and I can fill in the bad portion from another disc (say from my local library). even if that second disc is also damaged, it only matters if the damage impacts the same exact area.
3) related to #1, not all DVDs / Blurays are just video. many times extra "PC" content is stores on them, just having a makemkv workflow means I'll miss those.
Now you might ask, why do I have to use dvd decrypter here? It's the only program that will brute force decss an ISO as one has to do (well, makemkv will do it as well, but its not useful for making a DVD backup copy). For instance AnyDVD will remove AACS (and other java oriented protections) from an ISO but won't remove CSS from a DVD. (it also fully reauthors the DVD making ripping very very slow). DVDFab (at least when I tested it a while ago) wouldn't remove any protection from an iso, maybe it changed for BluRays to keep up with anydvd.

Re: Problem with Babylon 5 Crusade DVDs
I will have to get the disks out to check this, but that won't be this week... They're in a box under a bunch of others right now.

Re: Problem with Babylon 5 Crusade DVDs
I'm going to experiment and see what happens when I create an iso with old school DVD decrypter directly instead of my ddrescue method (as I know these discs are clean and should read fine).
But as noted it seemed to work fine when working on the disc directly, but not on the image I made of the encrypted disc. My guess would be a different codepath when using brute force decryption as opposed to key exchange based decryption.

Re: Problem with Babylon 5 Crusade DVDs
followup, a iso made with dvd decrypter (i.e. decrypted) works fine. Pretty sure this indicates a problem with the brute force CSS method.
