Hi there, I would like to back up my UHD collection but have a question. My projector is an Epson LS10000 that cannot do HDR but 4k looks amazing. I assume my UHD player plays the SDR version in this case, if I rip with MakeMKV will I run into any issues? I have read that some people have washed out video because it plays an HDR version on a SDR display.

John
yes i dont think there is an sdr version on the disks only hdr but it depends what you play it back with most hardware players have good hdr to sdr conversion. software players are getting better vlc just got a massive improvement but still a noticeable difference the best tone mapping players i have used are any that can use madvr and funnily enough the windows 10 moves and tv app is good at tone mapping too probably because of xbox playing uhd disks.

Hello,

Im new to this whole UHD ripping but have been using for a couple of days now and im very impressed with MKV, I will be purchasing. I did have an issue with The Last Jedi UHD but it finally worked?? It sat in my drive (Asus BW-16D1HT) then tried and it worked. Very weird. I also noticed that cleaning the discs works if you get errors. I havent quite figured out how to setup and access dump files but I havent really needed to as all discs have been ripping fine with cleaning the discs periodically.

Thanks for all the hard work!!

That doesn't make sense. HDR is not a layer on top of SDR information. You can't strip it away.

Guys
I am a long time user of makeMKV, but to date only "standard" discs not UHD. I have bought several standard/UHD packs over the last year or so as future-proofing, but ripped only the standard. I would care to start ripping the UHD, but am having difficulty.

I bought an extra drive on eBay advertised as "UHD friendly" - specifically an LG BH16NS55 brand new, manufactured November 2018 and pre-fitted with ROM Version 1.02. The device is external, mains powered and connected to my computer via an external USB port. Both Windows (10) and makeMKV can see the drive.

So far so good. However ... I cannot successfully rip ANY of my eight UHD discs!
2001 - A Space Odyssey
Blade Runner
Blade Runner 2049
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Ex Machina
Interstellar
Martian
Matrix

This may or may not be relevant but I live in Australia and ALL discs are the Australian release and fail with a variation on the theme below - which is for Blade Runner 2049. In this instance, but by no means all, I was able to select the files I wanted (a copy of the main movie and a smaller file to find out what it was) and select the preferred audio and subtitle streams in makeMKV. Then ...

The small file - a video colour tester - works fine; but NO MAIN MOVIE.

Hopefully it's a silly error on my part, but any insight into what is going on from a more experienced member would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know for sure, but it LOOKS like your drive is losing connection once it tries to shove a lot of data down the pipe (such technical terms I know LOL). I'd try a different USB port and/or cable. It's on a USB 3 port right? Just a gut feeling on this one.

I have the LG WH16NS60 UltraHD Blu-ray drive
I'm trying my first UHD disc - I Am Legend, and I'm getting these messages in the log:

Code: Select all

Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - KEY NOT PRESENT' occurred while issuing SCSI command A40..002000800 to device 'SPTI:\Device\CdRom1'
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - KEY NOT ESTABLISHED' occurred while issuing SCSI command AD010..080002400 to device 'SPTI:\Device\CdRom1'
Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive
Saved AACS dump file as C:/ProgramData/MakeMKV/MKB20_v61_I_Am_Legend_BA57.tgz
LibreDrive compatible drive is required to open this disc - video can't be decrypted.
Failed to open disc
At one point MakeMKV did indicate that it was downloading a file to support this. I purchased this drive for the specific reason of working with 4k UHD discs, and the fact that your forum for UHD Drives indicated that this was a "UHD Official Drive"

Not enough info provided but my guess would be the drive has firmware 1.01. See this:

Guys

ALL GOOD WITH MY LG BH16NS55!

As Mike and SamuriHL directed me toward, the problem was connector-related and the solution proved simple, but a little clunky.

To recap, I am powering the UHD reader directly from the mains and thus was using an EXTERNAL USB port on my desktop computer (via a SATA to USB adapter) for data transfer. Opening the case, bypassing the adapter and plugging directly into a motherboard SATA connector completely fixed the issue. :)

Dodgy adapter? Power fluctuation to the external USB port? Not sure, but this morning I have successfully ripped Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049 and Ex Machina!

MY GRATEFUL THANKS TO ALL.

Hello, newbie here *waves*

Speaking of BH16NS55's ... I bought one (with 1.02 firmware) to back up my UHD discs on a Mac mini running El Capitan 10.11.6, and I just tried my first rip using MakeMKV 1.14.3 for the Mac using Incredibles 2 as my guinea pig test disc. The burner and disc shows up in MakeMKV as

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/rdisk4
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BH16NS55
Revision: 1.02
Serial number: KEHI6BB****
Firmware date: 2115-12-11 14:40
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 61

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.02
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Possible, not yet enabled

Disc Information
Label: INCREDIBLES_2
Timestamp: 2018-09-12 16:13:52
Data capacity: 61.93 Gb
Disc type: BD-ROM UHD
Number of layers: 2
Bus encryption flags: 80
It didn't go too well. :(

(First stupid question: Was I supposed to select the "Decrypt video files" option? I was trying to do a bit-copy of the disc just to test it out first.)

I got a few ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - AUTHENTICATION FAILURE messages at the start, before ripping took off in earnest. About 3/4ths of the way through I got two Hash check failed errors as well.

Infuse 5 Pro on my Apple TV 4K refused to recognize the resulting ripped BDMV folder.

I'm pretty surprised by the hash check failures. I should note that this was the very first time I used the drive, and the very first time the Incredibles 2 disc had been inserted into any drive at all. I highly doubt the disc itself is bad.

What do the errors mean?

Is this the manifestation of the "Sleep bug" I've seen some people mention?

Why did I get such a difference between the first try and the 2nd try, with the same drive/disc? :?:

1. you should decrypt so that you can play the video back other wise you need to decrypt it with make mkv before playing it. double work and time.

2. that can mean many thing but the 3 most likely are dirty/bad disk, defective drive, or bad power/sata connection.

3. idk

4. never seen a drive start getting errors after it finished a backup strange.

5. no its not the sleep bug that only happens when the drive is idle and they you tried to read it, it will not happen when during a backup.

6. idk again i have seen about 8 defective drives sometimes they were fine others they would fail.
