Yes you can. Discussed many times already and you have already been told twice by two different members here that yes it’s possible to crossflash that drive to make it work. The answer is not going to change. Let’s hope this third time is the charm and it sticks. READ:

Will this include support for re-badged BU50Ns like the Buffalo BRUHD-PU3?
Yes, but confirmation is needed. Do you have the drive by any chance?
I do in fact have this drive!

Will it be supported as well or not?

Thanks,

I do as well and would be happy to test.

Will there be an advantage to using a official drive vs a friendly drive?
Yes, the absence of "sleep" bug and (presumably) the better support of UHD-rom discs. Ability to make a warranty repair if drive stops reading UHD-ROM discs...

Will an official drive be a requirement at some point?
No. All current "friendly" (and "supported "official") drives will work forever, in a sense that no official firmware or AACS update would make them unusable.

Do we have an ETA? Will it be before Christmas?

Check with your uhd friendly drive supplier about the warranty issue. I will take care of any warranty issues that arise if you purchased your drive from me.

Nobody an idea regarding this
https://www.lg.com/us/burners-drives/lg-BU40N
Drive?

Actually when i search for LG BU50N i don´t even find a similar page at LG... anyhow - quite some images on Google Picture search.
Could this be the european Version which is not visible on LG Side from my IP?

Just to make this crystal clear in my mind having read the evolving 32= PGE Thread about friendly and UHD drives and the fw hassles....

LG are now supportive of f/w on the WH16NS60 and Makemkv will read discs in it and rip them the way we currently rip Blu-ray discs..... choosing the movie, audio streams and subs etc.
Is this correct?

I am trying to work out why this drive is so scarce in Australia.

LG, the company, is not supportive of anything, especially the idea of kicking down a BU30N when asked nicely :-)
Nothing has changed as of yet with the WH16NS60. They can be flashed and made usable with makeMKV but are not yet natively supported.

To add to jonghotti's correct answer. LG has nothing to do with and will never have anything to do with anything developers like Mike are doing here. Start by getting that idea out of your mind.

And in theory, yes, technically when Mike adds support to his application for this drive with stock firmware we should be able to do as you mention.

THanks for clearing that up. I didn't realise it was more an issue of Mike building in compatibility than LG changing their approach.

Seems Asus still have the better product and even a crossflashed LG is better than off the shelf. Given I've never touched my current drive since removing riplock and flashing it about 6 yrs ago I doubt I'll have any need with the new one I'm getting off Alex either.
