Cannot Rip any UHDs anymore

Post by recordplay »

Hi everyone,
I am new to the forum and I must I love this program but the last couple of days have been frustrating to say the least. I have not been ripping any movie for about a month because I was out of town for business. I started back this week and I have not been able to rip hardly UHD blu-rays anymore. I opened up a brand new copy of COCO and I cannot even get it to read the disc. I had it ripping at first then it failed. I tried Avengers Infinity War and once it gets to about 50% it starts giving me error messages. Tried Alien Covenant and half-way thur it, I get the same thing, error messages and the same with Ant-Man and The Wasp. Examples would be: Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00003.m2ts' at offset '23374331904'; or Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00003.m2ts' at offset '23374331904'
Its extremely maddening considering I barely had any problems before. Surprisingly, I had no issues with either Star Wars movies, The Last Jedi or Solo. They ripped with no issues. Black Panther, no issues, Despicable Me, No issues. I would blame the drive but honestly it seems to work fine. I am using Makemkv 1.12.2. I really wanna know why Coco is a problem. I have not seen anybody say they had issues with it.

Thank You

The first thing to try is clean the disc. UHD's are very temperamental. Even if they look perfectly clean, give them a clean anyway and try again. This seems to resolve most people's issues.
Cheers :D

Took your suggestion and I was finally able to rip Infinity War no problem. :D I cleaned the disc using a microfiber cloth and eye glasses cleaner. I did the same with Coco and Alien Covenant but I am still having issues. Alien Covenant goes pretty fast ripping it and about 50 percent of the way thru, it stops and gives me the same error messages as before. My drive finally reads Coco with no problem :D but it rips very slow at about 2.0x till about the half way then it starts to slow down :( Any suggestions guys?? My drive is the Asus BW-16DH1HT.

When I've had issues before, I just have to keep re-cleaning discs and most of the time it eventually works. It took me a long time to get Interstellar to rip completely--I probably tried a dozen times and got a little further (almost) every time after I removed it and cleaned it again. Sometimes if I use a different drive it makes a difference, but I realize that's not an option for everyone. I've only had 1 disc (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) that absolutely wouldn't read and I needed to exchange for a new copy that then ended up working fine on the first try. Unfortunately you might be passed some of the store dates to exchange--I usually try to do it ASAP in case there is a problem as I've had it happen on a few regular Blu-rays too.

Yea it really sucks  I just tried coco again and was going fine at around 2.0x 8.5MB then it really started to slow down and eventually stop. First I got this error message, Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00099.m2ts' at offset '8606183424, then this, Error 'OS error - STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR' occurred while reading '\Device\CdRom1' at offset '8606183424' It almost seems like me drive just stops reading it for some reason which is weird.

The error messages that you posted in the previous post indicates that the rip is stopping at the same place. I am inclined to think that the disc is defective. Hope I am wrong but I don't think so. Good Luck

Is there any reason why there are no issues with playing these discs in a UHD Blu-ray player, but trying to read them for ripping has so many issues? If the dirty / bad disc was the issue, why does it not impact all drives / systems equally?

Players are programmed to tolerate & smooth over 'minor' read errors during playback (consider how many handle/treat discs), while a copy requires bit for bit accuracy.

That makes sense, thanks.
