Compatible MAC UHD Drives

Post by jackaloopt »

I have been attempting to find a compatible external Mac UHD drive that will work with macOS High Sierra 10.13.4
I have the following drives that support BDXL that currently DO NOT work:

PIONEER BD-RW BDR-XD05B 3.00
HL-DT-ST BD-RE BE12LU38 1.00 (LG BE12LU38)
HL-DT-ST BD-RE BE14NU40 1.01 (LG 14NU40)

I have recently purchased the Archgon MD-8107S-U3YC-UHD external drive and that to does not work. It will mount the disc to the desktop but will not play UHD content.

I have recently purchased and am waiting for the VicTsing External Blu-Ray Drive to see how that may work (or not) and will update my post upon further investigation.

Any help/assistance would be much appreciated.

MakeMKV_log.txt
Errors reported using the Archgon UHD drive. I have a feeling that it's the drive itself that has the problem and not MakeMKV but wanted to provide the log just in case.
Thanks,
Adam

I am in the process of using the LG-WH16NS40 4K UHD friendly drive (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6827136269) with a SATA-to-USB 3.0 adapter (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6812232070) OR Vantec 5.25 SATA enclosure (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6817392100). All these things will arrive tomorrow, so I will update you if this works with my iMac with High Sierra. I have read that makeMKV program has some issues with the latest High Sierra OS, so will see whether I run into the same issues or whether everything works out.

I'm using one of these:

https://www.ebuyer.com/696346-asus-bw-1 ... t-blk-g-as

Inside one of these:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OWC-Mercury- ... rmvSB=true

On a Mac, works perfectly. Drive shipped with firmware version 3.01.

i'm on my 3rd drive trying to make this work..

Today the LG WH16ns40 arrived & I am using the Vantec NST-536S3-BK NexStar DX USB 3.0 External Enclosure for SATA Blu-Ray/CD/DVD Drive and I'm having the same exact problem

I put the UHD disc (tried 5 different disk today), the drive spins.. and spits it back out.... I can successfully read a BlueRay no problem.

I never even get to the step with MakeMKV to click on the disc

I notice is shipped with firmware version 1.03

This is so frustrating. I have a Server in my house that runs Server 2008R2 that I could pop the drive in & see if it's a MAC problem or what.. not even sure if MKV runs on Server 2008.

The Windows version of MakeMKV runs on Win2008.

If you're accessing it via a remote console, though, you'll have to give the remote console permission to access the optical disk; by default, that is forbidden.

I'm using the same drive (Asus BW-16D1HT), but from Amazon.com. Mine came with v3.0, works beautifully.

I got the same OWC case, but straight from OWC. It's FABULOUS. The front bezel is a little thin and flimsy, but the case itself is pretty legit, USB 3 port, shock mount at 4 points per side, plus rubber feet, I don't recall if there were shock mounts on the bottom. VERY quiet. I can't hear the drive spinning at all. Runs pretty cool as long as you don't put anything else on top of the case.

I did the same thing. Ordered the Asus BW-16d1HT from Newegg and it came with FW 3.01. Got the OWC case straight from OWC. The Asus drive works like a champ hooked up to my 2008 Mac Pro through a USB 3.0 card and Antek USB 3.0 hub.

In case it's useful for anyone, i brought a BW16D1HT this week from cclonline.com and it was manufactured in May 2016; v. 3.0. Works a treat inside one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OWC-Mercury- ... 2749.l2649

The power supply was rather squeally so I swapped it for the one I used with old external liteon bluray, and I works fine.

andfull, links to ebay and similar sites usually aren't valid for very long - it would be better to link to the manufacturer or distributor's site for something a bit less "transient".

If you'd like an external drive, I have been using this one with a Mac with no problems for UHD or Blu-ray:

http://www.lg.com/us/burners-drives/lg- ... -dvd-drive

It needs to be firmware 1.01 or earlier as far as I know.

Pretty sure if you find the right external case (some others have suggested) that since the LG WH14NS40 (NS50) (with 1.02 firmware if you want UHD friendly) should work since it's listed on the Hackintosh buyer's guide.
