Removing an audio track from an mkv

Post by B17NNS »

I've ripped a disc today but I included all the audio and subtitles. The mkv is surprisingly large. Without re-ripping is there a way to remove the audio and subtitles I don't want. I just want the movie and the True HD track.

I use MKVToolnix for situations like these. You just load the file, find the audio track and set it to not copy in the output file. Of course, it'll still take some time to remux, but should be much shorter than the original ripping time.

It's also good for setting subtitle tracks to forced.

NEVER download from that site, only download from the official site:

Personally, I'd go to the author's site, because fosshub had a compromise a couple of years ago that had a number of projects infected with malware. mkvtoolnix was one of the projects affected, and they were still serving infected versions for a couple of months after the compromise was acknowledged and allegedly fixed.

Make sure you do a scan of the install file before using it, whatever the source!

Brilliant, thanks all.

Did exactly what I wanted. 60Gb file down to 45Gb. Pretty fast too.

Normally, sage advice... except when the author's site directs to fosshubdotcom...

"The current version v24.0.0 is available as an installer and as a portable 7zip archive for download from fosshub.com. Supported Windows versions are Windows 7 and newer."

@Woodstock - the official download site for MKVToolNix is FossHub. What you said is false regarding the FossHub security breach. It is true that we had such a problem and we didn't attempt to hide this incident, on the contrary, we made a public statement describing what happened after we shut down the entire infrastructure. You can read it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comme ... _security/

We served infected files from our CDN for several hours. Your claim that we served infected files for months is a significant mistake considering that we serve 5-10 million downloads each month. We would've been flagged, shut down and end up in prison assuming your statement was correct.

@d00zah - just in case you are not aware we served hundreds of millions of downloads over ten years. Yes, in 2016 we had a security breach for several hours but despite this incident keep in mind that most download sites infected users on purpose. To back up this, just read this article https://www.howtogeek.com/207692/yes-ev ... the-proof/ and also to see that we were also mentioned among being the cleanest download sites https://www.howtogeek.com/254042/the-fr ... re-on-you/

I know what you guys might think about FossHub but please don't trust any article or comment on the Internet blindly. Hear our version too and draw your conclusion. Our "About Us" page is pretty neat, and it is what we believe.

That being said, despite that incident in 10 years of being a reliable and trustworthy download place please expect to hear many good things from FossHub.

I apologize for this intervention to the admin of this forum; I just thought it would be fair to share our opinion considering FossHub was mentioned several times.

Thank you!

@FossHub 'the official download site for MKVToolNix is FossHub' is actually the only point I was attempting to make... & poorly, it would seem. The only source I've ever used.

I can only go by experience. And, for at least 60 days after the break-in, I was still getting different files when I downloaded the "current version" from Fosshub vs. downloading it from the author's site. I cannot say why there was a difference, but it kept me suspicious.

Of course, I'm not generally trusting of anything on the web... I even verify what Mike posts here, down to checking IPs and hashes, before installing.

@d00zah - no worries, we apologize if we misunderstood your post.

@Woodstock - two options here: you got a cached copy of the previous version or worst a bug that we had after FossHub was changed which returned random files to a few visitors. It took us a while until we figured what happened. At that time, we had a super short timeframe to rebuild FossHub, and unfortunately, this caused this bug which was very hard to reproduce (very rare and random). It was fixed, and the chances for this to repeat in the future will be zero as soon as the new FossHub is launched.

I agree with you here - you shouldn't blindly trust a downloaded file. Maybe the site is legit but you never know when it gets compromised and it starts to deliver infected files.

For example, during that security incident timeframe, other popular download sites and services delivered infected copies since they were leeching bandwidth from us.

The point is that you need to verify the files you downloaded. We are working on something that will boost user confidence that the files are legit and they have not tampered.

Thank you!

In that case, you can use Joyoshare Media Cutter to remove audio track from an mkv. You just need to add an mkv video to Joyoshare and turn down the video volume to zero(Click Edit>Audio). As for removing the subtitles from mkv, you can choose "No subtitle" in Joyoshare(Click Edit>Subtitle). And then export the mkv file without sounds and subtitles.
