Quantum of Solace - MakeMKV rip fine, but can't transcode

Post by aravenel »

Hi all,

I've been trying to work on Quantum of Solace BluRay, and while MakeMKV seems to have done it's job and the resulting file works fine, when I try to transcode it, nothing I do seems to work. I wanted to see if anyone here had had similar issues or had any ideas about what might be causing this issue.

Here's what I've done and what I'm seeing:
  • Backup Bluray with MakeMKV. Works well, and resulting file plays perfectly all the way through.
  • Transcode to smaller MKV using Handbrake (h264). Completes fine, but video is now full of distortion and artifacts.
  • Try transcoding using recent build of x264. This time, the transcode fails out (without an error, naturally :?) about 2/3 of the way through.
  • On a whim, try using AnyDVD to do a backup of the whole disk (m2ts). Transcoding of these files completes without error, but either the timing is all off (sometimes it's like it's on fast forward) or I can't seek through the file.
Any idea about what's going on here? Anything else I can try? It's driving me absolutely crazy. I've never had this much trouble with a bluray. It seems like MakeMKV did it's job, but why can't I transcode?

FYI, I'm running linux (ubuntu), but have a Windows VM for AnyDVD/eac3to/etc if need be.

Thanks!

hi, can you try an updated build of x264 (i changed the ffmpeg config in that thread so it works correctly now). If this doesnt work, can you try piping from mplayer to x264?

Trying that right now. We'll see how that works--it's showing me percent complete and ETA, which is a change from before, so that's a start at least...

What could be causing it to do this? Is there a logile generated by x264 anywhere that I can look at? I've scoured the web looking for it's logfile location or naming convention, and can't seem to find it...

By the way, you can use "backup" function im MakeMKV to get decrypted original M2TS files, same as AnyDVD would produce.

Hi!
Backup Bluray with MakeMKV. Works well, and resulting file plays perfectly all the way through.
Try using multiAVCHD to compress this file...
