Unable to read UHD with friendly drives

Post by jpsdr »

Hello.

I have the following drives :
ASUS BC-12D2HT With firmware 1.00 (Original)
ASUS BW-16D1HT manufactured february 2015, with firmware 1.01 (Original)
LG BH16NS55 with firmware 1.02 (Original).

Both ASUS stay in "empty mode" when i put an UHD Blu-Ray. The LG detect it properly.
Is it normal that i can't see UHD Blu-Ray with both ASUS ? Is it a too "old/low" version FW issue ?

BW-16D1HT :
I've taken the 3.02 update file from firmware HQ in theses thread. Can i safely update from 1.01 to 3.02, or are 3.xx firmware only for more recent drives ?
Edit :
As i have several drives, i've tried to upgrade to 3.02. It didn't work, the ASUS FW program update i took on FW HQ supposed to upgrade to 3.02 said that my 1.01 FW is up to date... :?

BC-12D2HT :
Is there any FW update, i can apply on a 1.00 FW drive, still allowing me to read UHD Blu-Ray ?

As i use the LG as a Blu-Ray and M-Disc burner, the other drive (i don't connect both ASUS on the same time, it's one or another) is for reading purpose. So i would like to have one of the ASUS being able to read UHD, and free the LG from it, allowing me to update firmware if there is, as its primary function is a burner, and primary function of the other drive is reader.

As i had several drives, i've tried to force the FW on the 16D1HT.
I've first used the patched FW programmer to force FW to 3.00, and then update with 3.02 from Firmware HQ.
It worked... At least, the FW update part, but now, the drive is dead... :(
It's clear that 3.xx FW are not meant for drive with 1.0x original FW releases. Even if the drive is BW 16D1HT, there is things which are differents, and for both the 16D1HT and 12D2HT, if original FW is 1.0x, it seems that the drive is different, and is not even able to read UHD BR.
At least, that's my conclusion.
I've ordered another 16D1HT, hoping having this time a recent enough manufactured drive, to have at least a 3.00 FW.
If it's successfull, i'll probably a little after buy another one as back-up, and i'll be able to update the FW fo the BH16NS55 without concern.

My new BW-16D1HT just arrived, this one was manufactured in june 2017, and was with FW 3.01. I've updated to FW 3.02, and everything is fine.
So, the result is that if your BW-16D1HT is "too old", and has an 1.xx FW, you can't use it to read UHD discs, and you can't also force an upgrade to 3.xx FW, you'll screw the drive.
Same for BC-12D2HT, if "too old", it will not work.

I suspect the following, but it's just a guess : These drives, both ASUS and LG are drives which can burn M-Disc. It's possible that all the drive which have the loophole are M-Disc compatible burner, and it's linked to this. The harware (or anything) needed for being able to burn M-Disc, made, "by chance", these drive able to read UHD disc. Maybe UHD Disc and M-Disc share some identical features, but they didn't noticed it in the first place.

Did you create a bin file of the firmware 1.01 from your BW-16D1HT or have the bin file for it? I've been searching everywhere for it on google and cannot find the file.

So, dipping my feet in the waters here and have an Asus BW-16D1HT drive with a mfg date of Jan 2018 with FW 3.02. Reads blu-rays fine, but my system doesn’t see any disc in the drive when I put in an UHD disc.

I figured the “hole” is blocked with FW 3.03, below is the info for the drive - any idea why my system doesn’t see a UHD disc in the drive?

This has been discussed in multiple topics after its discovery. See this topic here for example:

I just tried this for the first time this morning.

Put in Star Wars TLJ (the only 4k disc I own) and make mkv came back "no disc" after it spun for 60 seconds...

ASUS BW-12B1ST v1.02 & Win10 in a HP XW4600

I have never had any issues with any regular BR disc with this drive.
?

And Star Wars TLJ is one of the hardest 4K UHD titles to rip, hands down :)

It’s a bit subjective but for the most part, in my experience, the discs that give these drives + MakeMKV the most trouble are the Disney/Marvel releases.

Maybe Han Solo 4K will be better 🙂
