Launch of application creating file on desktop

Just upgraded to MAC version 1.12.0 and overtime I open the application it creates a file _private_data.tar file on the desktop. What is this and why is it creating it?

Go to Preferences->General, and set a makemkv directory. That's where those files would normally be created.
