ripped dvd/bluray allways less crisp and a bit blurred

#1 Post by aarbee » Mon Feb 19, 2018 8:31 pm

I try to rip a few of my dvd's and blurays for my plex server.
I found out that they all have less crisp colours and seem a bit blurred.
Wondering why that is, and how to prevent that.

As a main tool I use MAKEMKV (free version) and I have bought WINXdvd and dvdfab.
I heard so many good things about makemkv that I thought to use it too. But now that the result is the same, I wonder why that is.
Are there hidden settings? Or am I simply to critical?

Left is original in powerdvd, right is in vlc after creating.

I can play the mkv in Powerdvd as well. But I see that the quality is still a bit low.

Thanks ahead,

RobB

MakeMKV simply copies the video stream (and audio, etc) off the disc, exactly as it is, into the MKV container file, without touching it.

So this is really a playback question for the playback forum.

I don't use PowerDVD, but my guess is that there is some sort of setting that is processing the playback, much like on a TV you will have preset modes such as Cinema, Game, etc.

But hopefully someone familiar with PowerDVD can help.

VLC is one of the worst media players around.

Try MPC-BE.

Tried it. Looks better indeed.
Thank you for that.

Not quite the original, but very acceptable.
Yet in Plex, via the browser it looks bad again.
Can I do anything to improve that?

Thanks ahead,

Short answer: This happens, because your Plex Media Server is transcoding the source file on-the-fly in a smaller file, so that it can be displayed on other devices or browsers. The only thing you could do about that is on side of Plex Media Server, where you have to configure and choose the right transcoding profile. For untouched quality there should no transcoding happen at all. But this is a question for the Plex forum. ;)

PowerDVD ist a Software, which can enhance your videosources. It has a feature built-in, where you can see the differences in realtime while playback a movie (Settings -> TrueTheater -> Displaymode).

VLC Media Player meanwhile is the worst media player around the world. Once upon a time, where big p2p sharing was great (before version 1.0) it was a great tool, capable of playing back brocken video files. But nowadays it's broken on all sides, especially on gpu decoding (which is meanwhile enabled by default). It should be nowadays the last choise to playback anything.
