DFEX directory on UHD discs

Post by onewhorips »

Hi there,

I have been trying to decrypt The Martian Extended Edition now for a few days with no luck. I have a proper drive and the key has been released for that disc, so I don't have the best idea as to what's gone wrong.

However, today while trying to make a back up of the disc, I noticed that there was a "DFEX" directory in which there were a few files. I didn't really think anything of it until I looked up the type of file present in that directory: a .scav file. I looked that extension up and it appears to be a disc first aid... and then I realized that if you were to say DFEX aloud it sounds like defects. I looked back at the MakeMKV program and saw that there had been errors spitting out like:

Code: Select all

DEBUG: Code 0 at h(BZV-JrIjt/1~;5p:121266856
Does this mean if your UHD disc contains a DFEX dir it's a bad disc?

I did a little bit of testing on this theory. I cleaned the disc thoroughly with some isopropyl alcohol and it backed up the disc no problem. However, I could still not decrypt it even thought there is a key out there for The Martian Extended Edition. (Anyone have ideas as to why it wouldn't decrypt?)

I haven't had any luck decrypting The Revenant either, so I checked to see if it had a DFEX dir and it did, and yet I made a backup of The Revenant no problem. I couldn't decrypt it though.

Arrival is another movie that I can't decrypt and have a key for yet it won't decrypt. It backed up just fine though.

So... what does it mean if there is a DFEX dir?

Re: that MakeMKV isn't decrypting these discs for you even though 1) you have a key and 2) backup works. Since backup works, your discs are fine. My guess is simply that the keys currently out there don't apply to your discs. It's not a one-key-per-movie situation and it may not even be a one-key-per-UPC situation.

(I have the US release of this disc waiting for me at my US mailbox. I'll probably pick it up on Saturday.)

You guess was right. Now that some more keys were released, The Martian Extended Edition ripped just fine from the rip. We just gotta stay patient for more keys to come out.

Has anyone gotten this DFEX folder for the Martian Extended UHD in 2020?

I just tried backing up the full UHD disc to get the menu system and I saw a DFEX folder in the output files.

The disc is clean with no scratches either.
