Hi
I have makemkv and dvdfab10 for backing up my bluray discs and am after best quality for home cinema.
I have noticed that makemkv makes files that are over 1gb larger than Dvdfab and wondered if anyone had noticed the same and what the differences are between the quality of video. This is using passthrough on Dvdfab, so theoretically both tools should give the same quality, but there seem to be subtle differences.
Thanks
Mkv file size and relative quality makemkv vs dvdfab10
Re: Mkv file size and relative quality makemkv vs dvdfab10
A lot would depend upon what you ask each to save.
In the case of, say, DTS-HD MA audio, MakeMKV will default to saving that track, AND extracting the lossy DTS track from within the DTS-HD track as its own track, for compatibility. You can see this if you expand the title display to show the individual tracks within.
But some people have seen decreased sizes on the MKV simply by running it through mkvmerge. I have not tested that.
If DVDFAB is truly doing pass-through of the video, it should have the same quality as the pass-through done by MakeMKV.
