so latest update said it gave support for hevc. im wondering is there an option i need to press to save mkv files out as hevc? or is it automatic. and does this mean they will come sout being a smaller file size at the same quality as before.. or should i expect slightly less quality at the cost of a smaller file size?

MakeMKV makes no changes to the video codec. It will rip HEVC content, but it won't convert to it.

That requires a tool like handbrake from handbrake.fr.

That would be 4K blu rays because those are encoded with HEVC. Standard blu rays are H.264 for the most part.

Handbrake provides HEVC codec.
