Problems converting HER

Post by jus1973 »

Hi all.
Below is a dump from the log when i try to extract the main title from "Her". I love the film but the disc is one of about 7 which handbrake fails to work on directly. I use MakeMKV on my blu rays so had hoped for more success. Apparently not. The disc is in tip top condition, so dirt isn't the issue.

Any ideas on what is causing this? The other films I have this same style of error with are listed below, and interestingly all have their titles between <> in Finder (I use OSX but the same is true on win8), e.g. <HER>
Color Purple
Hancock
Sin City 2
District 9
Vantage Point
Dark Skies

The disk may appear to be in "tip top condition", but your drive says otherwise:
Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_12_1.VOB' at offset '22947840'
Error 'Posix error - Input/output error' occurred while reading '/dev/rdisk3' at offset '22947840'
If handbrake was failing on this title, now you know why - the drive says it found an uncorrectable error.

Cleaning is always the first step - "looks perfect" to human eyes and laser sensors are two different subjects. All it takes is a haze on the surface the size of a water droplet to make part of a disk unreadable.

Hi
This seems to be the standard response in any forum, however, since the discs are methodically cleaned with fluids and cloths designed to clean discs before any attempt is made to work on them. I'm not convinced. There is more to this than muck and dust.
Note also from my original post. The other films I have this same style of error with are listed below, and interestingly all have their titles between <> in Finder (I use OSX but the same is true on win8), e.g. <HER>
Color Purple
Hancock
Sin City 2
District 9
Vantage Point
Dark Skies

Also since I get this

CellWalk algorithm failed (structure protection is too tough?), trying CellTrim algorithm.

On the initial read of each the disks listed , I am almost certain that there is some relationship between the copy protection system, the use of <> to encapsulate titles, and the fact that these disk don't behave like the 650-700 other disks I've used.
I've also used the imaging tools in OSX to create non optical clones, to then look at their performance with makeMKV, but it produces a similar sized output to handbrake, about 48kb.
To me this is some form of encryption to prevent what I'm trying to do, and was wondering if anyone had similar experiences with UK versions of these disks, and if so, what solutions are out there, if any.
Further thoughts welcome.

I would like to (belatedly) back up the original poster. I'm having exactly the same problem as he is, with exactly the same log.

Seems hard to believe it's an identically dirty disk.

A friend of mine has also failed to rip his own copy of the same DVD. Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence but the third time....

I've looked into manual mode - if you try to rip just title 47 (which seems to be the only one with the correct length of film) it goes all the way through to the last 1% and then hangs again with an unrecoverable error.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Anyone succeeded in ripping the DVD of this film?

I haven't tried this particular movie, but I have experienced similar problems with other DVDs
using makemkv.

I have always been able to do this:

Open the DVD with vlc and determine the correct title number and last chapter number
in that title.

Say the title is 47 and the last chapter is 15. Assuming your dvd device is /dev/dvd,
then (on linux at least, I don't know about any other OS) run:

mplayer -dumpstream -dvd-device /dev/dvd dvd://47 -chapter 1-15 -dumpfile DUMP.mkv

When it's done, mplayer will say it dumped core. Ignore that, it still will have created DUMP.mkv
in the current directory. DUMP.mkv can be input to HandBrake.

Thanks for this.

This did not work either - it crashed only about two minutes into the film.

However, you have given me a clue which helped me to solve it.

The first thing to do is to use vlc to confirm just how many chapters there are (12, as it happens.)

And then I got the absolute latest version of makemkv (1.10.8) and opened this disk in the ordinary way (not manually, just normal).

There is only ONE title out of the several you can select which has exactly 12 chapters. Select that, leave the rest strictly alone.

And it worked!

(I did this with the previous version 1.10.7 and it crashed right at the end - but this time, we seem to be there!)
