Can you please explain why I see so many titles?

Post by Kapunka »

Hey guys,

could someone explain to me why MakeMKV (first time I use it) shows me sooo many titles? When I select everything, it rips the movie twice with the same size (43.x GB). The first file has 32 chapters (as shown by PowerDVD 15) and the second has 147 chapters. It rips a third video (actually the second in queue) that are just test pictures, which are not accessible by the BR menu. All the other audio streams are not even ripped. And I removed the 5 second filter.

I also like to know why DTS Surround 5.1 English is checked, but the parent DTS-HD MA Surround 5.1 English is not. Wouldn't it be smart to just rip the higher quality audio track?

Those are the logs and I attached some screenshots of the MakeMKV window.

Thanks and looking forward for some answers

You are one of the millions of victims of Lionsgate. They employ a technique generically called "Playlist obfuscation", which produces dozens (DVD) to hundreds (BD) of fake titles. It's discussed in maybe a hundred different topics on this board.

If you have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from java.com installed, MakeMKV will try to figure out which title is real, move it to the top of the list, and mark it as "MainFeature".

And you'll want to know about the "right click" context menu, where you can unselect all the titles at once, then select the real one.

Hey Woodstock, thanks for the input. I'll read into the Lionsgate thing.

I have installed java and put the path to java.exe in the preferences. But I don't see any change in the main window. And there is no indication of MakeMKV trying to figure something out. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for the tip with the context menu.

Cheers!

I think this is more than just playlist obfuscation, it's someone just discovering what is actually on a disc.

How a disc is authored is completely up to the producer of the disc, ie there may not be rhyme or reason why it was created the way it was. I also have seen duplicate or triplicate titles of the main movie; sometimes with varying chapters as you've described, sometimes with different audio tracks, and sometimes straight-up identical. Again, why? Who knows...

Then you may come across different versions of the movie, as example happens often with Miyazaki's anime films, where the playlists of the main movie vary in the language of the main titles and credits, all else is identical.

And, of course, there's what Woodstock described, called playlist obfuscation where there are literally HUNDREDS of similar playlists but only one is correct and you have to find it. Won't go further on this one, google for more information.

Welcome to figuring out how to rip a blu-ray!

As to the audio track, if a high-resolution track is available, you can check the box in front of it and it will rip. You may want to read this page for basics (it describes ripping a DVD but gets you mostly there for blu-rays as well): /onlinehelp/. After that, experiment and keep reading the forums. When I have a question about something specific to MakeMKV, I google search starting with "makemkv" then my question or search phrase. Come up with most of my answers that way, the rest get asked in the forums.

Good luck!
