Toshiba SD-H802A (FW: TS07)

1) U2 Rattle and Hum
2) Paramount
3) AVC (main title only)
4) DDplus 5.1 EX & DTS 6.1
5) Ripping fails on the main title (feature*.evo), the rest ist created successfully.

The disc was successfully ripped via DumpHD but that took ages. Interestingly even the decrypted files (disc structure) brought the exact same error in MakeMKV, so the problem could be related to a faulty video parser.

Faulty video parser where?

MakeMKV doesn't decode the video, it just compares time stamps between the video and audio streams.

Yeah, definitely seems to be something wrong with 1.10.1 in regards to HD-DVD (and/or the 360 HD-DVD drive). I was trying to make an mkv of a new HD-DVD I'd bought and it couldn't get past the initial scan after clicking the big "Open HD-DVD disc" button.

So I inserted a disc I'd used recently and it did the same so I knew there was a problem. But the last time I made an mkv was on w7 I think, whereas I'm now on w10 (w10 home, ver. 1511, os build: 10586.545). So thought it may just be my HD-DVD drive (not exactly a new bit of hardware).
But then I came on the forum and read the above post by 820am, so I found an older version in my download folder (v1.9.10) and tried that.

I swapped to a free USB 2.0 slot on my motherboard (the USB 3.0 port disconnecting itself), but after that I've had no problems. I managed to make an mkv of the new disc, it's extras and another previously used disc just to be sure.

Re: Problematic HD-DVDs

Post by turnkit »

I emailed this but in case this is better -- I think many, many HD-DVD titles are currently not able to be processed and might be fixed with some different identification algorithm:

Is there a way to change some of this post's fonts to a fixed width font? I could make it read a lot more easily.

I think the main issue is that MakeMKV is looking for HVA00001.VTI pattern but some discs only have files like HV011T01.EVO so MakeMKV only recognizes the discs as data discs not HD DVD Video discs and refuses to back them up or rip them.

See: https://imgur.com/a/2M8ud for screenshot showing MakeMKV 1.10.7 showing this Underworld HD DVD as a DATA DISC.

~~~
Recently I've imported several HD DVDs from Europe --"DFW - Dutch Filmworks" labeled -- several (but not all) of which when inserted in MakeMKV show up as "Type: Data" so they can't be backed up.
Since the MakeMKV Open Files... dialog filter for "Hd-dvd files" (sic) show:
DISCID.DAT
HVA00001.VTI
MKBROM.AACS
discatt.dat
and the discs which won't backup are missing, as far as I can tell, files with any of those patterns,
do you think a too restrictive file filter could be the reason I can process these discs?
Below are the files on two DFW discs - one that won't backup and, for comparison, one that will.
If the solution is as simple as changing the file filter, I would be glad to test a tweaked version of MakeMKV on my Mac OS system! (I am also in correspondence with another fellow ripping his large HD DVD collection using Windows and he has mentioned this "DATA" disc issue as a problem for him also for several of his discs.)
- turnkit
p.s. on an example of one the discs that did backup okay from this same distributor (see second directory listing below) I was surprised to see the message, "AACS directory not present, assuming unencrypted disc." Perhaps many of these discs are authored with very minimal sophistication.
UNDERWORLD
1) Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire Live at The Greek Theatre
2) image
3) Not sure
4) DD Plus 5.1 / DD Plus 2.0
5) Does not recognize disc at all (Type: No disc)
6)
File manager reads the disc fine:
Root directories:
AACS
AACS_BAK
HDDVD_TS
Under HDDVD_TS:
HV000I01.BUP 14KB
HV000I01.IFO 14KB
HV000M02.EVO 1,376KB
HV001I01.BUP 104KB
HV001I01.IFO 104KB
HV001M01.EVO 720KB
** then 25 EVO files HV001T01.EVO to HV001T25.EVO (1 GB in length each)
HV001T26.EVO 43,238 KB
HV002I01.BUP 16 KB
HV002I01.IFO 16KB
HV002T01.EVO 778,596 KB
HV003I01.BUP 14 KB
HV003I01.IFO 14 KB
HV003T01.EVO 56,168 KB
I can copy any of the above 25 1GB EVO files to my hard drive, but MakeMKV does not recognize any of them if I browse to the storage folder. I can open the copied EVO file with VLC which shows as a 6:xx minute video and shows as playing, but it's a black screen with no sound.
I just purchased MakeMKV to convert my old HD-DVD collection. I've successfully converted 11 movies prior to this snafu. This disc is not a movie, but rather a live concert with a different EVO file structure compared to the movies. The main feature seems to consist of 26 EVO equal length 1 GB files so that may be part of the problem. Plays fine via the Xbox HD-DVD player on my XBox 360.
I have a number of HD-DVD's that I would like to salvage. If you don't mind, what drive are you using to read these discs into your system and how are you making the connection(sata, usb, etc.)?
