Large Blu-ray titles do not close following conversion

Post by lbyler »

(ObApologies) This is my first post. I couldn't find a better folder, so forgive me if this is the wrong place (and please point one out to me if it exists).

I'm also new to MakeMKV, so I may not be using it correctly.
(/ObApologies)

I have a number of Blu-ray titles which I would like to convert so they can be played by VLC without jumping through VLC's many hoops. These titles only exist as Blu-ray .iso images.

MakeMKV seems to work just fine on title components shorter than ~4GB. Above that, it converts the title but hangs following conversion. Elapsed time increases, but remaining time freezes at 0:00. My only option is to Cancel, and the .mkv file is deleted.

I've tried a Ctrl-C copy (this is a Win7 system) of the .mkv file before canceling, but apparently the limits are not yet updated. VLC opens the copy, but it has 0 length.

I wanted to attach two images of MakeMKV and a debug log, but the board won't let me ("Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached.") I'll try inlining the log.

I'm in a 30-day evaluation phase. I would be glad to purchase, but I need some assurances that it will do what I need.

4GB is a "magic number" associated with drives that are formatted as FAT32. How is your drive Z formatted?

I routinely write BD rips much larger than 4GB.

Ah, I'd forgotten that, but it is not the situation in this case. The original Topsy Turvy .iso image lives on the same disc, and it shows 46,221,760 KB. Besides, if I had hit that limit, the copy would have been interrupted at that point (and MakeMKV would not have "hung", it would report an error and terminate the copy), rather than continue until the entire file had been copied. I write "hung" because MakeMKV does not hang, it continues to log elapsed time. It seems to be waiting on some event, a final write of buffered data, a file close perhaps, or a sync related to closing a file. Is there possibly some concurrency limitation on reading from and writing to the same drive? I was hoping the log might help identify the cause of the problem.

The Z drive is actually on a network accessed box (Synology DS1815+). I'll try makemkv'ing that 4.4GB file via a network address, then to a different NA drive, and also to a local drive, then report back.

Thanks for your help.

You've got the newer version of my Synology, so I know it's not a limitation on size. And mapped paths aren't an issue for size, either.

I haven't done any rips with 1.10.5 yet (it came out after the last batch of disks from rightstufanime.com arrived), so you MIGHT want to try it with an older version from /download/old/ , just in case it is a bug in MakeMKV.

I'd like to try an older version (I've downloaded .4, .3, .2), but they require a registration key that I don't have.

The registration key that is in the current version should apply to the older versions.

Unfortunately, Mike didn't replace the beta key in this message yet. Try this: with 1.10.5 installed, go to Help->Register. Is the input box filled in? If so, that should be the current beta key, and you can copy it to your system clipboard to install on the older version.

Not sure if the key will be there - it's been years since I had to rely on the beta key.

My copy of the current version (1.10.5) has no key in the input box. The key at http://makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1053 says that it is good through March 2017, but does not work in 1.10.5: "Your temporary key has expired and was removed. Please restart the application." followed by: "This application version is too old [!]. Please download the latest version at http://www.makemkv.com/ or enter a registration key to continue using the current version."

I get the same result when I try the above in 1.10.4.

Incidentally, the main window title bar reads "MakeMKV beta", but Help->About displays "v1.10.5 [win (x64-release)]" (as in "release", not "beta").

[not sure my previous reply made it through]

There is no registration key in the current version. Although the key at the page you provided says it should be valid throughout March, my 1.10.5 copy wouldn't accept it. Nor would version 1.10.4, when I tried that.

Incidentally, the title bar says "MakeMKV beta", but Help->About says "v1.10.5 [win(x64-release)]". Is it a beta or release?
