Hi,
I'm using a Surface Pro 3 laptop with an external USB Pioneer Blu-ray drive. When I load MKV, the DVD icon is grayed out and the onscreen message says that MKV "Can't find any usable optical drives."
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Cragar
Can't find any usable optical drives
Re: Can't find any usable optical drives
Hello,
I just solved this problem by right-clicking on the MKV application filename and running the program as the "Administrator."

Thank you for this, you save me a bunch of time!. I recently installed new windows updates and I'm thinking that messed with makemkv, because my problem started with the first system restart after the updates.

Re: Can't find any usable optical drives
There was another thread on this with a different fix, go to Window Security -> Ransomware Protection and either disable it or add an allowed app
Re: Can't find any usable optical drives
Just to add to this, ran into the same problem with Windows 10.
Just adding the makemkv.exe file alone didn't fix it, I added the rest of the exe files in the folder as well.
Windows Defender Security Center -> Virus & Threat Protection -> Ransomware Protection -> Allow an App through Controlled folder access
Add each exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV

Re: Can't find any usable optical drives
The 1.14.4 has an option to install an optical drive access service - with this service MakeMKV does not need to be run as administrator, and should be immune to Controlled Folder sandbox.
Re: Can't find any usable optical drives
I installed the access service, but it still did not work until I allowed access. Perhaps if I restarted after it would have allowed it to work. I can try that later, but an install alone did not work.
Re: Can't find any usable optical drives
@sxotty: I'm seeing the same behavior on a new Win10Pro v1903 install, I have to run MakeMKV as Administrator for it to see the optical drive, even though everything else (including Windows Explorer) has no problem seeing the drive when running as a user.
Did you ever find a solution other than running ripping jobs as Administrator?

Where is this SERVICE? What is it called?
Is it one of the .EXE files in the folder?

Re: Can't find any usable optical drives
When running the MakeMKV installer you will get the following prompt. Check option.

Re: Can't find any usable optical drives
In my case I found that windows security was the problem and had to change it's settings. those setting were preventing me from doing more than watching my movies. I also upgraded to opencloner firmware'd ASUS BW-16D1HT /BK/UHD/CI
