8-bit only rips of blu-ray

Post by finite9 »

Hi!

I ripped my blu-ray disc: the hobbit, to hard drive and I couldnt see any options for ripping the video, but when i run mediainfo from the terminal on the resulting file, it says it's an 8-bit AVC High@4.1 with chroma 4:2:0 YUV. The original blu-ray disc according to my Denon AVR-2310 receivers info is a 12-bit AVC with chroma 4:4:4 YCbCr (see pastebin pic)

Is it correct that AVC can actually be 12-bit 4:4:4? I thought it could only be 10-bit, so maybe my receiver is misreading the HDMI input info?

Can MakeMKV not rip at 10 or 12-bit? Im running makemkv 1.10.4 on Fedora 25.

Unless I'm mistaken, blu-ray discs are 8-bit bit depth only.

All Blu-rays, including 4K are 4:2:0 Chroma. 1080p Blu-ray is 8-bit.

Only 4K is 10-bit (HDR10) and 12-bit (Dolby Vision) through the use of HDR.

weird that my sony bdp-5000 (or whatever the model is) reports as 12-bit 4:4:4 but I did suspect it was wrong. thanks for the clarification

What the hell are you on about?

You said the receiver reported it as such. Receivers don't decode video, they decode audio, the best you can expect from a receiver is for it to upscale the video. I think what you're looking at is the format that's been transmitted through the HDMI connection which can be anything within spec regardless of original source.

yes, thanks for that ndjamena. i'd sort of guessed that the receiver was just reporting info about the link itself, but im still curious as to why a standard blu-ray player would ever report 12-bit 4:4:4. When I choose another source using the same hdmi cable it correctly reports 8-bit 4:2:0.

But don't worry yourself about that :)

It's actually quite normal for Blu Ray players to process Blu Ray playback differently to file playback. MKVs actually have no ability to declare frame rates so a player may set the HDMI connection to ~24fps for an actual disc but leave it at ~60fps for an MKV made from the same disc. You're essentially using two completely different methods of playing back the movie when using Blu Ray vs MKV and you really shouldn't compare the results.
