Fatal Error

Post by LuekG »

I've been using MakeMKV now for a couple of months and in that time I have copied 793 of my Blu-ray and DVD's.
This week I was about to purchase it as my wife said i could have it as a Christmas present, but this week it has started to mess up.

I have quite a few more DVD's and TV shows on Blu-ray to go through and it has now started to come up with a fatal error and close,
even when it has opened the disc and is ready for me to select the streams to copy.

I have even gone so far as to format my computer so that MakeMKV is the ONLY installed program on my PC.

Still no joy.

Does anyone know what is causing it? A Windows update? Anything?

Any help here would be great as thankfully for now I have copied all my 3D Blurays as DVDFab doesn't do mvc mkv's and that is what I now have to use.

Thanks in advance!

First question is, are there any entries in the Windows Event Viewer that match up with these crashes?

Which version of MakeMKV are you running?

I have the same issue all of a sudden after upgrading to 1.10.4 on Win10.

Reinstalled 1.10.3 and same issue. No prior issues with the application countless times.

Its not the content as I am able to use HandBrake successfully. I also tried a disk previously used with MakeMKV.

Very strange.

I resolved this issue -

Looks like somehow the latest Windows 10 update(s) re-enabled the PC firewall and it was specifically blocking the makemkv executable.

Additionally, I noticed that various options in MakeMKV's preferences (e.g. custom Java path, default export path, etc.) were populated with garbage ASCII strings (similar to "AAAAAA//adddadsdasd//AAA") - not sure whats up with that.

In any event to resolve it disabled the local Windows FW (I recommend that you make an exclusion and not disable it entirely if you have no other security in place).

I then deleted the entire MakeMKV reg entry under HKCU, rebooted, reinstalled the application, entered my key and reset preferences.

No issues.

Still should not show a "Fatal Error" though IMO.
Yes, each time I have applied a Windows Update Microsoft has seen it upon themselves to turn on things I do not want and then the game beings again!
