Audio track not listed

Post by keithhelms »

I have an anime disk that has multiple episodes in one title. All episodes have two audio tracks - the English and the Japanese versions. The first episode also has a third audio track containing commentary, but makemkv does not list that track. Is there a trick to extracting audio tracks that only span certain chapters of a title?

Does the disc also contain each episode in its own title, or perhaps just the first episode in its own title? If yes, then rip that title; it will contain the audio track you're looking for.

Which anime? I might have it in my collection, and can check it...

The show is Danganronpa from Funimation. The episodes are also available in separate titles on the disc and episode 1 DOES have the commentary track in the other title, however the separate titles do not include the episode credits. So, I can either extract it as a single title with commentary and no credits or as part of the combined title with credits but no commentary.

I ending up extracting it both ways, then pulled the commentary track out using mkvextract and combined it with the version that included the credits using mkvmerge, but that's a lot of work for one episode and I wondered if there was a trick I don't know about.

I don't have that one.

But the general rule with Funimation disks is to grab the single episode titles, and ignore the combined. The single episodes properly list the audio tracks that exist for that episode... Although I'm seeing Funimation go more to SPECIAL titles, where the episode plays as a "picture in picture", while you watch the voice actors discuss things. They'll be found on the second disk, as an "extra".

Example that I just ripped: Prison School commentary for episode 11 is sixth title on disk 2 (episode 10/11/12 individually, combined 10-12, an ad for Funimation titles coming soon, come before it).

I usually do rip the single episode titles, but for some reason they did something weird with this release and put the episode credits in a separate segment from the rest of the episode.

Title 0 which contains episode 1 only includes segment 14
title 1 which contains episode 2 only includes segment 15
and so forth

Title 9 which contains all 9 episodes has a segment list like
14,48,15,49,16,50,17,51.... etc. where the 48,49,50 segments are the episode credits.

I haven't seen (or haven't noticed) that pattern before. I'll have to go back and spot-check recent releases and see if I've been dropping the credits in my extracts.

That's the only trick I know. Thankfully, don't have to use very often...
