Can't find picture in picture? Don't skip duplicate titles?

Post by preserve »

The example is Beauty and the Beast Diamond Edition, but I'm sure it's relevant to other discs as well.

In this case, I want the work in progress version of the movie, which on this disc is featured as PIP picture-in-picture.

I've read elsewhere on this forum that PIP is handled as a separate video track - it can be ripped with the main track, but it can't be ripped as its own file. This is one example where it's not something like commentary, and ideally I'd want to rip it as its own file, because I'd prefer to watch it by itself.

But I can't even find it. The main feature is 800 and 801 (extended version).

Neither playlists have any additional video tracks.

I suspect the PIP is included with the playlists 802 and 803, identified as duplicates to 800 and 801 - and so MakeMKV doesn't give the option to rip them.

Can anyone help? :)

Disney titles have between 2 and 4 main tracks, differing only in the titles/credits and the occasional sign, for English (800), Spanish, French, and sometimes another language. They aren't really duplicates, but they are over 90% the same content.

From what I've read, the "PIP" function is done in Java by the player. There are a couple of topics around here about it, but you can't search for "PIP" to find them with the search function (too short a word). So the play lists might be identical except for the Java code to include the video from a separate title, and that Java code would be in the menu.

If you need the PIP, doing a Backup would be your best bet, since that would preserve the menus.

Hmmm, but that title / content still has to be on the disc somewhere, so in theory I should be able to rip it separately then, shouldn't I?

I use a low number of Seconds for title detection, and MakeMKV provides a lot of not only mpls playlists but also mt2s files. I ripped everything that MakeMKV detected, and the PIP content wasn't there.

Well, I don't really want the entire disc if possible.

But I haven't used the Backup feature before, so I'll try it to see what it does.

The backup feature will create a copy of the BD structure, optionally with the copy protection removed, so that BD-aware players can access the files "just like" they were playing the BD itself.

Here are a couple of topics that discuss MKV and Java-based PIP:
