The "No Disc" issue

Post by vrod1992 »

Greetings everyone,

First of all thanks to all the devs for making such a great program! I am currently digitalizing my entire DVD and Blu-ray collection and this program has made everything easier for me.

I've ripped over 40 blu-rays and DVD's so far, however I have stumbled upon a few of them giving a "No disc" error. I have searched and found that it could be an issue with the drive, but some of the movies have been just out of the foil and the drive still rips other Blu-rays without issues. The issue is only regarding the blu-ray discs. Specs below:

OS: Win10 Build 14393
BD-ROM: USB3.0 Slim drive ECD008-SAU3
Movies affected: Expendables, Martian, Bourne series + some other movies.
MakeMKV version: 1.10.2 Beta

Not sure if the pc specs are necessary but the rig is with a 5960x cpu and 32g of memory.

I don't have any other BD-ROM's, but I've thought of getting another "real brand" one to verify with. Just not entirely sure why it wouldn't read some specific discs? Could it be the encryption? Neither MakeMKV or the OS sees this.

Thanks,
Chris

"No disk" means MakeMKV asked the operating system about the status of the drive, and the OS said "No disk". Encryption issues give different errors - either that the access key used to read the disk was not acceptable (Key exchange failure), or debug errors because unexpected results were returned.

So far, I have not seen "No disk" on a new disk, but I have seen a lot of read errors on "fresh from the box" disks, due to some sort of chemical film that seems to be introduced during packaging. Sometimes it takes multiple cleanings to get it off...

I have also seen "unable to load disk" if there are mastering or manufacturing errors.

Does anything change if you eject the disk, then put it back in? I have seen Windows decide that the disk was never changed...

Thanks for your answer! I did some trial and error and someimes when ejecting tve disc and inserting a few times, as well as rebooting, the disc (Martian) shows up. Just did now after a fresh reboot, opened makemkv and was able to start the copy.

Funny behaviour, but as long as it worls. :D

OK so all the movies seem to work now - however I've noticed that the MakeMKV program sometimes "causes" the no disc problem. I ejected one of the copied BD's and put in a new one. MakeMKV saw no disc and so did windows. Exited the MakeMKV program and reseated the BD. Windows could now recognize it and so could MakeMKV when I started it afterwards.

Hi, I've just installed MakeMKV on macOS which uses an external Blu-Ray drive (HL-DT-ST). When I insert a Blu-Ray disk the on-screen graphic suggests the disk is being read but after a few seconds the software reports 'No disc inserted'. The disc is Independence Day II. I've checked with a an older Blu-Ray (Con-Air) and get the same response. If I insert a basic DVD in my Mac it is successfully identified by MakeMKV but the same DVD in the external Blu-Ray drive results in 'No disc inserted'.

What am I doing wrong?

Most likely, the operating system has gotten lost with the connection to the drive. The usual work-around for that is to reset the drive, which is relatively simple with USB, you just eject the device, then reconnect it.

That resets all information in the operating system about the drive, so it SHOULD now be able to figure out there is a disk inserted.

Thanks for the very prompt response. Actually did a complete reboot but got exactly the same response. I can hear the drive respond for 2-3 seconds as the disc is seated but then 'No disc inserted'.

In fact the more I look at this the more it points to macOS as the issue. I know MakeMKV can find the player but if I look in Finder or Disk Utility it's not visible and the Macgo player can't find it either. I think I need to trouble shoot the Mac before wasting peoples time :-/

Just installed the latest version of macOS and tried again. The external optical drive is still not visible in Finder or Disc Utility but it is seen by MakeMKV. It starts to run when a disk is loaded returning the message 'Disc is being loaded' but after a few seconds this changes to 'No disc inserted'. The log shows:

Is your Blu-ray disc 4k? I heard that right now there is no PC drive can read 4K Blu-ray.

Thanks for the suggestion but it's not 4k. Interestingly the hardware supplier thinks it could be the hardware and has arranged to replace the drive. I await it's arrival with interest.

Happy to say the problem has been resolved. The replacement hardware was plugged in and immediately the disc was recognised AND it was available in Finder. No issues with MakeMKV.

Sorry to reopen this thread...this is my first post and I wasn't sure whether to start a new one or just continue from here.

Anyway, I've been using MakeMKV to backup encrypted discs for awhile now and I really like the program (especially the free beta key!), but I'm now just encountering this same "no disc inserted" issue that many have reported in various threads. I just got a copy of the Allman Brothers "Idlewild South" Blu-Ray from the Super Deluxe Set that I'm trying to decrypt with MakeMKV, so I can run the decrypted MPLS files through DVD-A Extractor and cut a DTS-CD for the car (Yes, I'm a surround sound enthusiast), but no computer I have seems to detect the drive (LG CP40NG) as long as this disc is in it. It's as if there is no drive connected at all. But if i put in another disc, all of a sudden it reappears.

I tried two windows PCs and a macbook pro. On windows the drive doesn't appear in the file manager and on mac the drive automatically spits out the disc. I read all the other threads on this and tried most suggested solutions, updating drivers, rebooting, ejecting drive, etc.

I honestly find it hard to believe that the only fix for this is changing hardware...this drive reads every disc i have, dvd or blu ray, EXCEPT this one.

Help!

And if you connect the drive without a disk, does it appear as a device, then disappear when you put this particular disk in?

Wow that was fast...

The drive does not appear under the file manager unless there is a disc inserted. Upon insertion I immediately get a notification in the bottom left corner of the screen saying "choose what to do with blu ray movies". When I put this disc in nothing happens at all
