Iron Giant - Blu Ray won't read

Post by jhodgesatmb »

I just got my new blu ray version of The Iron Giant from Amazon. Popped it into my faithful blu ray drive and it got ejected after several tries at reading. I pulled it out, looked it over, downloaded and installed the latest MakeMKV version, and retried. Same result. Anyone else having issues?

Can't say without more information. Right now it sounds like your drive and/or operating system are rejecting the disk before MakeMKV has a chance to see it.

MakeMKV does NOT automatically eject disks... You have to click that eject icon to get it to send the command.

I got my copy today and it seems to read fine on my drive, so you've either got a problem with your drive or your specific disk.

I say "seems to read fine" because it has multiple playlists. My plan was to pop it in and start ripping before I had to leave the house earlier, which did not work because the correct playlist is not immediately obvious. I am now backing up the disc and will determine the correct playlist tomorrow.

My version of MakeMKV can see the drive, and knows everything about it, including the firmware version. So does my iMac. These 2 titles that I got (Iron Giant and the original version of Tron) are the first blu-ray disks I have had a problem with and I have ripped about 100 blu-ray movies to MakeMKV with this drive. I'll try an older disk that has read ok. If I get the same problem I'll assume it is my LaCie (D2 12x Blu-ray drive) and look for a replacement. Maybe it is just too old. I looked for updated firmware and am having trouble finding it. My version, 1.0.8, is from 2010.

I just loaded my copy of Star Wars, The Force Awakens and it read just fine into MakeMKV. So it isn't the drive or the software. It 'might' be the disks. Unusual that 2 different disks would not load, but I am sure that I can get replacements from Amazon. Do others ever get unreadable disks they have to return?

Not unusual at all, I have it happen to me often. In fact, there's a title I have yet to rip successfully even after acquiring 4 copies; it's not an AnyDVD or MakeMKV issue as the disc is successfully decrypted, and it's an older title which I know of others who have been able to rip, just my luck that the copies I've gotten have been poorly made and my drives can't deal with them.

As a sanity check I dropped the 2 (Disney) blu-rays into my 2 blu-ray players (one Sony, one Panasonic, the latter being the newer model). They both played no problem. So it isn't the disks, and it isn't my LaCie drive, what is it? Is it possible that the drivers on the LaCie are just too old to read the content on these disks? As you know, the Iron Giant only just came out on blu-ray, but I think that the original Tron has been on blu-ray for some time. I could see Disney adding some kind of encryption but since I am the only one seeing this problem I suspect it is related to my LaCie drive (somehow).

It bears repeating...again...because a disc will play in a standalone player does not mean that it can be ripped. Playback can skip over sections on a disc that may be damaged or mastered poorly but ripping requires all content to be intact.

The issue resides in either the discs (if possible, try replacing with different copies) or the drive.

I am going to get another/newer drive and see if it will work with MakeMKV to rip these titles. If so I'll retire the other drive. If not I'll return the disks to Amazon for replacement (and the drive).

Just so that anyone who was following this knows, I got the new Pioneed drive today and it read both titles no problem. So the LaCie gets retired today.
