Inspector Lewis Season 8 - Blu-ray

Post by TwoMetreBill »

Hundreds of files, 5.5TB (not a typo, terabytes) to extract them all. Other than the first preview file of .5GB the rest are all either 6.5GB or 10.3GB. Going to let it run to the end (46 hours on a 6-core Xeon machine) and see if these are chapters. The first dozen are either the first 29 minutes or first 47 minutes of the first episode. The disk contains 2 episodes of 90 minutes each.

This is the first time I've heard of using play list obfuscation on a non-movie title.

Looks like it is screenpass/playlist obfuscation, AnyDVD confirmed: https://forum.redfox.bz/threads/copy-detected.70618/

Just to confirm: I have exactly the same symptoms with Lewis Season 8 Blurays. The second disk seems to be filled with the same pattern.
It is AACS v62.

I've converted all 5.5TB of files, took 46 hours. Now to go through them to see if they represent the separate chapters. This will take me some time, I'll post the results.

The screwed up playlists are not on chapter boundaries.

Does this mean that it isn't possible to put the episodes together?

I rip so that I can watch on my 5K HP monitor as our TV is only 720P and my wife doesn't care for most of what I watch. With AnyDVD, I could usually just watch with VLC and no need to rip. Some had to be ripped with Handbrake. I guess I could connect a Blu-ray player to me computer though I'd have to find one with DP output as I used a video card with 4 DP and no HDMI ports.

After playing many of the segments, I think the following is true.

1. work with only the 10 GB files, only 4 are needed
2. file 331 is the first half of episode "One for Sorrow
3. file 174 is the first half of episode "Magnum Opus"
4. file 398 is the second half of "One for Sorrow"
5. file 192 is the second half of "Magnum Opus"

The 6 GB files seem to be subsets of the 10 GB files

Instead of 331, I would have bet on 141

TINFO:141,26,0,"501,500,511,502,512,509,508,504,505,507,518,510,506,513,517,503,520,516,519,2,515"
TINFO:141,27,0,"Lewis_Series_8_Disc_1_t141.mkv"

All of the files of size 10,315,734 are identical. It doesn't matter which one you choose for "One for Sorrow" part one.

For what I see, sequence 331 is wrong
TINFO:331,26,0,"501,500,502,512,511,509,508,503,510,507,519,518,516,506,505,513,517,504,520,2,515"

see at 17:37

The three other ones seem good. Thank you very much.

On disk 2, 223 which is one piece (only "12") is part 2 of the last episode
and 311 is part 1 of the last episode
TINFO:311,26,0,"503,517,514,509,500,511,519,502,508,515,506,505,507,512,2,513,501,520,518,504,516"

I had no trouble converting 331 but will see what it is like after watching it all the way through. Maybe something will show up. I don't know anything about TINFO, what does that mean?

For disk 2, it seems that 222 is part 1 and 223 is part 2. Have converted 222 already and working on 223.

As an aside for HandBrake Presets. I've always used Normal in the past. But I tried both Normal and High Profile for file 222 and the panning is definitely smoother for High Profile. The high profile conversion was about 3-400 MB larger, I've deleted the small one already so can't check the exact size difference. The High Profile size is 2.28 GB.

I did the following.

command line:

makemkvcon -r info dev:/dev/sr0 > list
grep -B 2 mkv list > short_list

Then, the file short_list contains the detail of the segments used by each file.
The details are also in the makemkv screen, after the disk has been opened.

Then, I launch makemkv -> file, backup (before open the disc !) to backup the bluray on the hard drive.
I go to the subdirectory BDMV/STREAM/ of the backup, find the decrypted segments that I can read with vlc

Using these segments and the short_list file, one can discover the correct sequences.

Since neither 141 nor 331 are in sequence, how do you decide that one is superior to the other? Perhaps Handbrake ignores this? I still haven't had time to play the full file, got to finish up the garden for the year and get out and do some fall color photography.

You can not decide which one is good without checking if the segments correspond.
The sequence TINFO describes the order the segments are read.
For 141, the end of segment 501 matches with the beginning of segment 500, the end of 500 with the beginning of 511, etc.

Also, I'm sure that 141 is good: I watched it yesterday, and it matches with the french subtitles I got from TV recording.
