In the Heart of the Sea not playing

#1 Post by nemike » Tue Apr 26, 2016 6:19 pm

After ripping In the Heart of the Sea I cannot play it back, time doesn't progress, I can jump to any part of the movie and I get a still picture but it won't play.

The question is, "Play with what?"

While it isn't the best player out there, VLC from videolan.org is a good benchmark for whether or not you got a good rip of a disk. It is compatible with most video, audio, and subtitle encodings found on DVD and Bluray. Not all players can say that.

Does the MKV file play with VLC?

I just installed vlc 2.2.2 and while the video does play the audio is really choppy. I have been using Shark007 codec pack to play with windows media player for years and for all other rips that I have done without issue, only this one movie. And even VLC won't play it without issue. Any ideas? I did end up watching the blu-ray on my PS4 which worked fine.

In the VLC Information screen (Ctrl-I brings it up), check the Codec tab; what does it show for encodings?

Ok I found the problem. Its actually the audio that was the problem. The first track is:

Stream 1
Type: Audio
Codec: TrueHD Audio (trhd)
Language: English
Channels: 3F2M2R/LFE
Sample rate: 48000 Hz
Bits per sample: 32

I was able to select the second audio stream AC3 and that made the playback work perfectly in Windows Media Player via the Shark007 codec pack.

Thanks for all the help.

So no problem with makemkv!
