Ability to view region coding of disc?

Post by Krawk »

Is there a function in MakeMKV to view the region-coding of the inserted disc, be it dvd or Blu Ray?

When a disc in inserted MakeMKV tells you the disc type, recording technology (such as dual layer OTP,) data capacity, etc but it does not tell you that "hey this disc is region B," or this disc has no region selected (therefore making it region free.) We have even seen discs region AB but not C.

I would like to know this for personal preference but also to assist with blu-ray.com maintaining their database. You can go there and look movies up by country and title but often times region coding is incomplete.

If MakeMKV does not do this, how much work is it for it to do so?
Is there another easy to use app in the meantime that will give this info?
I have DvdFab and notice it will do a quick report of inserted media but will that show region coding?

TIA

I'm not sure - but maybe "MediaInfo". https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
It's free.

Yep that's what I use to identify the region coding on a disc that I own. A time-consuming and laborious process.

Thanks guys -
What makes this time consuming? Referring to having the "try" each region?

Am I to assume that it's essentially not easy to detect the region because the region coding is on the disc itself and has to load up, such as Java programming and such?

Well it turns out that the monkey (Dvd Fab) has an information view screen that tells me what I have been seeking, I think.
Is it truly reading the region coding from the disc or is it spooling this info from some database?
When I inserted Harbinger Down (German Import) the info screen indicates that the disc is region code protected and is region B.
Some of the other free apps out there are fishy by nature, but one that so many people tout as fantastic, BD Info cannot read discs because they're "protected."
