BD Drive problem after 1.9.8/9 upgrade

Post by Ripman »

I get the "Overread auxiliary data by 32 bits" from the dca decoder code in Handbrake for the 3 BDs in the Bourne box purchased at BB. Here is a link with a similar report. http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=8654

The DTS-HD MA audio track from Bourne 1 movie is 3+ gb. I can send a piece of it if that makes sense - as can be seen in the attached HB log, the errors occur in chapter 13. Tbh, though, I am thinking that the external LG drive is locked now. Win8.1 shows the drive has 5 region selections remaining.

I upgraded from 1.9.4 to 1.9.8 during the first week of 2016. (I upgraded to 1.9.9 yesterday.) On line 6 of each of the posted logs, there is a "DEBUG" message. I have received this message with every rip since upgrading to 1.9.8. I never received this message prior to upgrading to 1.9.8. Perhaps it's drive related; sometimes I start MakeMKV and if there is a BD in the drive, I get thousands of DEBUG messages, which causes me to reboot. I'm using an external LG BD drive with both USBs connected to ports on a Win8.1 machine.

I tried ripping a DVD from the drive, and that worked, but also gave the "DEBUG" message.

Attached are the 3 MakeMKV logs from the Bourne box, and an HB log for Bourne 1. I also put the log of a DVD rip from the LG drive. In the zip, all of my MakeMKV logs since upgrading to 1.9.8. Interestingly, for the rips in the zip that had DTS audio tracks, I put all of them back through ffmpeg/HB - converting the DTS-HD MA audio track to ac3 5.1, ac3 stereo, and aac stereo - and none gave the "overread" error. Even more interesting is the timing of the events: 1. on 1/6 at 7.30pm completed backup of The Third Man BD; 2. on 1/6 at 8pm upgraded to 1.9.8 to process Speedy with aacs v57 - this is the first rip with 1.9.8; and 3. after the 1.9.8 upgrade on 1/6, the external BD drive I use is not functioning normally.

I am OK grabbing a new drive bc that's the nature of this beast. But MakeMKV isn't supposed to process things that aren't 100% spot-on. And in the case of the Bourne BDs or other DVD I posted about, this did not happen. Also, given the timing of events and the supporting logs, it would seem that something in the 1.9.8 upgrade locked my BD drive.

And, even as the external BD drive is not functioning properly, I created some 20-30 mkv's in the last month. Should I redo all of those once I grab a new drive? (I've watched them all, and as mentioned above, ran them all through ffmpeg/HB to convert the respective DTS-HD MA audio tracks to see if there were any "overread" errors reported.)

Any ideas are helpful. Thanks.

Re: BD Drive problem after 1.9.8/9 upgrade

Post by Ripman »

Ok, I am thinking that my BD drive is now "bricked" - at least to some extent (e.g., I can process BDs, but MakeMKV gives debug messages).

Is it reasonable to assume that I could have prevented this by upgrading to 1.9.8 before inserting an aacs v57 BD?

Going back to 1/6, I do have the mkb archive file that MakeMKV created, so I'll send that tomorrow.

Thanks again.

If the AACS version killed it, there should be a message in the log... which get overwritten with each start of the program.

An un-handled version of AACS would make the drive ignore any BD put in it, until it is given an AACS key that hasn't been revoked. But your logs are not consistent with AACS being the culprit.

Version 57 of AACS needs MakeMKV 1.9.7 and later. V58 bumps that to needing 1.9.9. If there is a newer version disk out there, you should have a .tgz file from when the disk was loaded by MakeMKV, with a name like "MKB_vNN_" and the name of the disk. If so, forward that file to svq@makemkv.com so that Mike can look at it.

I am kind of with you Woodstock - thanks for responding. It's not a totally bricked drive, and yet, it seems a suspect newer BD may have triggered things. Kinda funny considering the BD is a hundred year-old movie.

I sent the mkb v57 file to support. I also sent a v53 that got generated for a different CR BD.

My 2 approaches are: 1. wait for a new makemkv release; and 2. buy a new drive. I'll wait a few weeks to see if a new release helps.

Right now, my bigger concern would be the January rips - in other words, even though I got debug messages, are my mkv files clean?

One of the problems with AACS, though, is that you don't have to try ripping a movie for it to revoke the MakeMKV key... Just loading it in the drive will update the firmware copy of the AACS revoked keys table, and all access to AACS-protected BDs stops until the key is updated. Although I doubt that would happen unnoticed with most of us, since the first time a disk goes into the drive is to rip it!

It's definitely going to be on a disk issued in the last 4 months, regardless of when the movie was made. v57 was just coming up in October, and v58 in December. And since MakeMKV changed keys in January, the studios would not have had time to update AACS and get a disk to market by now.

My op described a problem I've been having w certain BDs that have dts tracks. My list of BDs that give dts decoding errors follows: Bourne trilogy box; casino target steel book, & the conversation.

In the op and subsequent posts I thought that maybe my drive was partially bricked. I sent aacs v57 logs to the admin, & Woodstock offered insights. From my perspective, a new makemkv release may help.

Reading through past release notes, I wonder if the problem I am having is related to the dts decoder update in 1.9.5?

I downgraded to 1.9.4. That got rid of the debug messages in the makemkv logs. But dts deciding still gives errors in hb 10.2.

So I'll upgrade to hb 10.5 & see if that helps.

I ran the 5 "problem" BDs through 1.9.4 & then hb 10.5, and none had the dts decoding error. There is a weird sub track in the casino mkv that vlc doesn't recognize, so I'll investigate that when I can.

I'll retry the whole process w 1.9.9 when I finish the 1.9.4 testing.

If you are decoding DST with MakeMKV - MakeMKV changed the DST decoder from "dll hack" to open-source libdca between 1.9.4 and 1.9.9 . The version in 1.9.9 should work flawlessly, 1.9.8 had some issues. If you are not transcoding DTS with MakeMKV and only save as is - results should be identical.

I upgraded again to makemkv 1.9.9. I also upgraded handbrake from 0.10.2 to 0.10.5. This solved the "auxiliary over read " dts decoder error I was getting in hb. All BDs I posted having dts errors in hb have been successfully processed in 1.9.9 & 0.10.5 (e.g., casino steel book). I also successfully processed some new ones: all the president's men, Jurassic park vc1 2d, 7% solution...

In summary, the new dts code starting in makemkv 1.9.5 and in the most recent 1.9.9 was giving "auxiliary over read" errors with at least hb 0.10.2. The problem can be resolved by upgrading to hb 0.10.5. I did not try hb 0.10.3, and there is no 10.4.

The debug messages I was getting in makemkv 1.9.9 are probably caused by makemkv accessing my drives in a different way, or the drives not responding as makemkv expects. Either way, this seems to be a "red herring" that has no effect on creating successful rips.

Thanks for responding Woodstock & Mike.

FWIW, it was never a MakeMKV issue, regardless of version.

The issue was in newer versions of the libavcodec DTS decoder. When I implemented support for additional metadata (embedded 5.1 -> stereo downmix coefficients), I also checked for over-reads via a length field described ion the specification, field which turned out to be unreliable/useless.

The real bug is in a DTS encoder somewhere (or arguably in the specification), but since enough real-world content is affected, the libavcodec decoder no longer checks for over-reads of this particular metadata segment.
