Cannot rip disc, makemkv reports many different errors

#1 Post by J0SH44 » Wed Feb 03, 2016 11:38 pm

I have been using Handbrake along with Passkey to rip my videos to disc so that I can play them back over my Plex server. However, I have been having issues with my Minion bluray disc today. I posted in the Handbrake forum and was advised to try out MakeMKV and then use Handbrake to encode to the format of preference. Unfortunately, it looks like I am receiving quite a few errors using makeMKV as well. I have copied a few below but it is only a small sample (most are the 'The source file '/BDMV/STREAM/00800.m2ts' is corrupt or invalid at offset 839448576, attempting to work around' error with a different number).

I am not sure what makemkv is trying to tell me but I am sure it is trying to tell me something useful. Any help is appreciated.

Windows 8.1 install and version 1.99 makeMKV.

Code: Select all

Were there errors prior to these?

A suggestion - try doing backup with decryption instead of open/save. I'm working with Mike on one of my disks that gives the same sort of errors on 3 titles out of 20. If the backup succeeds, that means the disk itself is readable, but there is an issue with how the m2ts file is constructed.

handbrake can work with the backup, provided you point it at the right place. That's currently how I got my 3 "missing" titles processed. Going directly for the m2ts files doesn't work so well.

Hi Woodstock,

There window at the bottom of the GUI is loaded with errors, most of them are 'The source file '/BDMV/STREAM/00800.m2ts' is corrupt or invalid at offset 835319808, attempting to work around' with a different number for the offset. The errors that I have listed appear to be all the errors listed in the window--they just end up getting repeated for different offset numbers. One thing to note is that I was able to save two other titles on the disc--I assume they were two of the 'mini movies' advertised on the cover.

I will see if i can do a backup with the decryption box checked--just started it now. Will update with results.

Thanks

Results are in.

When the proc was complete I was presented with a box stating "Backup done but 1 files failed hash check."

The following was in the window at the bottom of the GUI

Code: Select all

Backing up disc into folder "E:/MKV/backup/MINIONS2D_NA"
Evaluation version, 30 day(s) out of 30 remaining
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.

I thought, what the hell, I will see what HandBrake does with it. So I sourced the folder in HB, loaded up my settings (mp4, 22, film, fast) and started the encoding proc. After a couple of hours HB completed the task without a single complaint (at least in the GUI) and a good looking 3GB video. I have a copy of the log (in case it is helpful in any way) below:

Re: Cannot rip disc, makemkv reports many different errors

On Disney animated disks like Minions, there are "3 copies" of the movie, where 99% of the files are actually the same file, with the titles and credits swapped out to match the selected language (english/french/spanish) It is weird that there would be an issue with one copy, but not the other two, unless it was in the titles/credits.
