Use Make MKV, then converter, video messed up

Post by jcr52 »

Hi. My first post here. I just got MakeMKV Beta and used it on several of my DVDs. It's worked great so far. They load on my hard drive and play fine using VLC. But when I use Wondershare Video Converter and convert them to MP4s to watch on my tablet, sometimes they convert OK and other times just the audio is OK but the picture is totally messed up, with strange shapes and streaks in blue and green and red, instead of the correct video. What can I do to correct this?

I noticed a video I converted that looked terrible using VLC played fine using the playback on another converter program. What can I do to get good copies in MP4?

Thanks for any advice.

There are several programs out there that convert MKV files to MP4.

First make sure you have the latest version of what you're using - if it is out of date, it might now know about VC1-Interlaced, but that's been out for 5 years or so.

Personally, I use handbrake (available over at handbrake.fr), but it's not a "drag and drop and it works" program.

I tried two other converter programs on a video and still have the problem of the video part being totally messed up. Do I need to adjust something on my MakeMKV program?

For some reason, a video I used MakeMKV to convert to a MKV file and then used Wondershare to convert to a MP4 will play fine when I use iSkysoft iMedia Converter Deluxe to play it, but wont play right when I use Windows Media Player or VLC. What's that all about?

MakeMKV is pretty much copying the video off the disk untouched, so the issue is in the converting software. VLC is a pretty good confirmation that the video going into the converter is OK. If you bring up the information screen in VLC while playing the MKV file, you can see what encoding was used on the various tracks within the title (third tab of the information screen).

There is not a lot you can do within MakeMKV to change the video (audio has some tweaks available), so it comes down to compatibility within the converting program.
