Missing Chunks of Video

Post by mhoyt »

I purchased a copy of MakeMKV and am really pleased with it but I'm having some trouble with my DVD of Planet 51. I am streaming it to my PS3 via PS3 Media Server and there seems to be a small chunk missing at the beginning of the movie about 15 seconds into the opening scene.

I've tried ripping the DVD using MacTheRipper's more exhaustive extraction engines and it never complains but that missing chunk is there if I point PS3 Media Server to either the MakeMKV output or the ripped DVD vob structure from MacTheRipper.

Why I am posting this here? Because MakeMKV does show some errors that I think may be related to the problem. I don't think the problem is with MakeMKV but rather it appears to know something is wrong with the source. I was hoping somebody here could help me understand what its trying to tell me and if it explains what I am seeing.

Here is what I see in the console when I run MakeMKV on the DVD source:

Any idea what this means and if it's related to the missing chunk?

Thanks.

Hi!
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION' occured while reading 'DVD+R-DL _NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A 1.05' at offset '1048576'

Is the disc you're using to make the MKV from a copy (DVD+R) or the original, commercial DVD?

Its the original disc. That error would suggest otherwise but its the original. Sort of strange.

I just tried Handbrake and got some interesting results. Handbrake on Linux wouldn't even present Title 1 as an available selection whereas Handbrake on my Mac seems to have worked. The resulting MKV seems like it's intact including the missing chunk at the beginning.

MacTheRipper (Mac) -> No errors, Streamed (transcoded?) VOB has missing chunk
MakeMKV (Linux) -> Provocative errors/warnings. Streamed (transcoded?) MKV has same missing chunk
Handbrake (Linux) -> No errors but doesn't see Title 1
Handbrake (Mac) -> No errors, creates MKV file, Streamed (transcoded?) MKV is intact (no missing chunks)

What would cause this?

The only thing that comes to my mind would be different methods of decryption, but I would deferto "mike admin" for further insight - especially since I primarily purchase BluRays and have limited knowledge (spelled N_I_L ;>}) of both Linux and Macs...

Looks like a problem in MakeMKV. Please submit IFO files per instructions at http://www.makemkv.com/faq/item/8 .
