MEDIUM ERROR:UNRECOVERED READ ERROR_Harry potter

Hello. Having problems reading 3 disks from the harry potter series bluray box set. The remaining 5 disks function fine. All three of three of these disks play fine using the same drive and the 'power dvd' software I use.

When I try to read the disks with MakeMKV I get the following error log:

The errors are consistent with a problem reading the disk header... These errors occur early, at the part of the rip where MakeMKV is looking at the copy protection portion of the disk:

Failing to read the CP information, it can't calculate the proper AACS key information to send, which leads to:

Make sure these disks are clean in the area around the hub... no fingerprints, no scratches.

Why do they work in a player? The player (essentially) only has one key to try, and it either works or doesn't. It doesn't have to discover information about the disk before trying to decrypt it, so errors near the start of the disk aren't as critical.

OK. Thanks for the advice, it's made the problem clearer.

Unfortunately cleaning the disks doesn't appear to solve the problem, so I'll return them and ask for them to be replaced. If this doesn't solve it I may come back and ask for more help.

Hello again. I've now received the replacement disks and unfortunately they suffer from the same problem. Could there be another underlying cause? Are there any tests I can run to check this?

If you do not run MakeMKV as an administrator, Windows may not give it permission to talk to the drive at the level it needs to be able to do the key creation. But that problem should manifest with all of the disks, not just three of them. And problems with the drive itself in this particular area will show up on all disks, not just a few.

I had the same problem as well. I got this Bluray boxset off Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006QR ... dp_summary

Every disc copied without issue except the Deathly Hallows Part 2 disc. It works in my bluray player, just that MakeMKV gets an error about 7Gb into the title. The disc was fresh out of the box set too. I'm hoping it's just a driver issue.

This error only pops twice on the log before the recording stops-

It's the first Bluray disc I've come across with any issue that it can't be read.

That appears to be the UK version of the same disk set I have, released in 2011. So it should not be a copy protection/BD+ issue.

Not sure what to say. Personally, I'd still give it my "standard treatment" (spray with Pledge wax, rub in with a clean finger, wipe off with a soft cotton or microfiber cloth), in case there was a fingerprint or residue from the machinery that moves the disks around in the manufacturing process (happens a lot), but I've been told it's a "bad thing" to wax disks, because any excess can be picked up by the read head and cause later problems.
