Hello,

I'm having trouble ripping a few movies. This log is for Insomnia, but the same thing happens with Finding Nemo. This is the first time I've encountered this error.

Mike will have to confirm with the debug codes, but the uncorrectable read errors are being reported by the drive itself, and the debug codes could be caused by errors the drive did NOT flag as errors.

I'm fairly new to this, so forgive my noob questions, but what does that mean? Errors with the discs? Faulty drive?

Simply put, errors in reading the disk.

Each sector of the disk has extra information in it to tell the hardware if it read the sector correctly. If that information is wrong, the drive is SUPPOSED to say, "I got an error". Usually it will try several times to get a correct read, before reporting an error (the "MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR" report).

Some drives are deciding to return what they got from the read, even if it is in error, and call it "good". When this happens, MakeMKV sees the data and says, "This isn't right... let's see what we can do to fix it up". This is where the debug messages come in, as MakeMKV tries different things to make the data work.

In your case, it seems the drive is returning both incorrect data and actual errors.

My first response to situations like this is cleaning the disk. Fingerprints can cause exactly what you are seeing, but minor scratches can, too. Spinning optical media is really a very fragile thing...

Each sector of the disk has extra information in it to tell the hardware if it read the sector correctly. If that information is wrong, the drive is SUPPOSED to say, "I got an error". Usually it will try several times to get a correct read, before reporting an error (the "MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR" report).

Some drives are deciding to return what they got from the read, even if it is in error, and call it "good". When this happens, MakeMKV sees the data and says, "This isn't right... let's see what we can do to fix it up". This is where the debug messages come in, as MakeMKV tries different things to make the data work.

In your case, it seems the drive is returning both incorrect data and actual errors.

Ah thank you for the explanation. I've cleaned the discs to no success. This happens with 3 different discs (2 are the same movie) every time I try to rip them.

JUST those three disks, that is, are other disks ripping fine?

If other disks rip fine, then the problem is almost certainly with the disks that are failing.

Two copies of the same disk that have errors in the same area can be a manufacturing defect. If the errors occur in different areas, though, that is less likely.

I ripped a few other movies tonight, they're fine. I guess it must be the discs. It just threw me because it happened for the same movie on two different discs.
