Hi,
I used the beta version of makemkv in Linux Fedora 20 with great results. Installation was by the Yum GUI built into Fedora.
I want to purchase the $50 Linux version but I am concerned that it may require more savy than I am capable of.
There is no online help for it or even tech support that I can find on your website. I love MakeMKV, it is better than when I used FabDVD in windows for Blu-Ray.
I don't want to spend my money and find I can't install it. What format is available. If it is a Yum package for 64bit then it would be simple.
Booting into windows to back up a disk is a hassle when the MakeMkv Beta version ran flawlessly in Linux Fedora.
thank you,
rcarrozza

Re: Linux MakeMKV
The difference between "free while in beta" and "paid license" is the license key itself. Once you buy a license key, it doesn't expire like the beta key does.
If you can install MakeMKV now, you're not going to change the install just because of the license key. And the license key covers all versions, not just the Linux version.

Re: Linux MakeMKV
Yes, I used to get a new key every month on the forum for the Beta version. That version is no longer on my computer since it somehow removed itself.
I have tried to install the tar ball version without success.
My real question is, when I purchase the key what version will I get to install? I have not had any success with the tar ball version and don't know if the Yum package version is still available.

Re: Linux MakeMKV
The YUM version was not generated by Mike; it was someone else packaging MakeMKV for Fedora. I have not checked it out to see if it is being updated.
Some people are finding this helpful in getting MakeMKV run on Linux: http://makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9451
The main issue with getting it to run appears to be in what libraries various distributions include. There was a post a little while ago about the latest version of ffpmeg being incompatible with building MakeMKV, for example.
Another project, handbrake, has gone to including the specific versions of required components in their tarballs, because of "minor" changes in those projects can sometimes make major problems. And some distributions disable key things in their versions of things like ffmpeg that disagree with the distribution's philosophy of licensing, meaning the version of handbrake they include in their repositories won't do what's expected of them.
I'm not sure if Mike can do that with MakeMKV - He isn't distributing under an open-source license, so including some projects could cause licensing issues.

Re: Linux MakeMKV
Ok, so there is a chance I may not get the latest version to run in Linux Fedora 20.
I do have two hard drives and one is Windows 7. You said earlier that "the license key covers all versions, not just the Linux version." So if I need to I can download the windows version and run it on my Windows drive. That is correct? I just much prefer Linux whenever possible.
thank you

Re: Linux MakeMKV
Correct, you can use the Windows version with the same license key.
Also, MakeMKV works well with network data drives, so if your Fedora machine is the one with a lot of storage, you can set up Samba on it to share that space with other computers on the network.
