File Naming

Hi,
I have just started using MakeMKV and it seems a revelation after many other products.
I have a great many DVD's I'd like to rip. When doing the first it seems to have a default output name of title001, and so the next one tries to overwrite it.
Is there a way of giving a rule to file naming?
I also noted a discussion around getting names that would enable metadata to be downloaded.
Is there perhaps a solution to one or both issues?

First, you need to explore more. The Preferences/Settings menu has the answer to the naming, to some extent.

Video tab, you can chose different levels of automatic destination naming. I use "SemiAuto", with the path set to a drive that all rips go to. This will try to set the destination DIRECTORY to the disk name (if present), and will usually also give a file name template.

The General tab allows you to invoke "Expert Mode", which will give you additional options for changing title names, file names, and meta data information.

There is no integration in MakeMKV for online "meta data" sites, like you see for CDs. Why? There really isn't one to choose that would be of much help, especially when a given movie could have a dozen or more different "disk signatures" in circulation at any given time.

I too have wondered what is with the file name system.

Firstly, why is Title 1 getting saved as title00 ?? Why not Title01? Should we not add +1 to each title name created so it's actual?
Then the true name - on some disks the title will get a name, such as Hard_Target-00.mkv or something similar while others stick to the title00 format. What is the rhyme or reason on what the program decides to name each title?

I have naming set to Auto - should it be set to semi-auto?
When I choose semi-auto it is asking for a directory name. Currently in auto mode all disc folders are saved under d:\video\ - Will semi-auto still create sub folders in the designated area?

I would like each disc to get a folder and the title(s) placed in the folder, preferably with the title named after the disc, rather than the default title00.mkv.

Doing a batch inside of handbrake it would be nice to know the files will not overwrite each other. Perfect example is Stargate SG-1 tv seasons. Disc 5 of season 5 is titled "STARGATE_SG1_V5_R1_YR5" but yet the titles inside all get generic names of title00, title01, etc. So Volume 4, 3, 2, 1 all get unique folder names, but all the titles inside are repetitive.
Why not STARGATE_SG1_V5_R1_YR5.title01.mkv, STARGATE_SG1_V5_R1_YR5.title02.mkv, etc?

I am delighted to see in general things work as they should and these little things can be worked around but it would be nice if they could be addressed.

Programming languages (and most programmers) deal with zero-based counting systems. That's why title names start from 00.

As for automatic naming, I set mine to semi-auto because I did not like the full-auto. Semi-auto will default to using the disk name for a directory name, and for naming files within the directory. But, having Expert mode enabled allows editing the names and file names before ripping.

Frankly, it's a confusing mess that I've become accustomed to from using MakeMKV so much. When Mike changes things to make them more intuitive, it confuses me.
