Fatal error

Post by ubose »

I updated to MakeMKV 1.9.5 on my Windows 8.1 computer. Every time I launch MakeMKV, it crashes saying Fatal error. I uninstalled it, turned off the computer, restarted, and reinstalled MakeMKV, but it still crashes. What should I do?

Make sure all the old code is removed during the update - If you click on "continue the install" before the old code is removed, it will leave mixed versions of the program present, which will cause problems like you're experiencing.

At this point, uninstall MakeMKV, restart the computer, then make sure the directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV" (or wherever you chose to install it) is EMPTY, with the exception of any profiles you have created (names will be like *.mmcp.xml, other than default.mmcp.xml), THEN do the install.

I did as you said but it still crashed within a few seconds after launching. Some details - after uninstalling MakeMKV, I did not find any directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV". I wanted to attach a screen capture of the crash screen but this discussion forum won't let me by saying that the attachment quota is reached even though the jpeg image file is just 67 kb.

Attachments haven't worked for a long time, since a crash on the host system.

Are you running MakeMKV as an adminstrator? Do you have Bitdefender installed?

You can also get information in text form on crashes by logging in as an administrator, and opening the Event Viewer in the Adminstrative Tools section of the control panel. It's easier to find the error if you check for it right after it occurs.

Here are items from the Event Viewer that occurred close to the time MakeMKV crashed.

I had similar problem with MakeMKV 1.9.5 with same symptoms: After startup - wheel of death - fatal error and program shutdown.

I've tried all advices, uninstalling, removing every trace of MakeMKV from Windows registry, even disabling BitDefender temporarily (I really don't understand why this could be necessary, nor do I like programs that cannot coexist with standard security measures). None of it worked. To exclude the possibility of my laptop having some setup that caused the problem, I went ahead and installed MakeMKV 1.9.5 on my girlfriends laptop. Well, same thing happened - startup - wheel of death - crash. So, I had to assume that some major bug was introduced in 1.9.5 version of MakeMKV and started waiting for reinforcements. Finally, now version 1.9.6 has arrived and *yay* all things back to normal, no sign of nasty bug :-)
