Dredd - Disk errors only in MakeMKV.

#1 Post by PlumberOfDeath » Mon Sep 14, 2015 12:28 am

I have been trying to create a remux backup out of the Dredd bluray but it's been failing over and over with disk I/O errors like the below. I've cleaned the disk thoroughly and attempted with multiple drives, same errors, same locations. If I increase the number of retries it does not impact the result. The interesting part is that I can play the disc via software and achieve a backup using Pavtube's Bytecopy on the same machine, so the disk is readable.

I own MakeMKV because I prefer it, I don't want to have to own two sets of software for backups, if avoidable.

If the drive is USB powered, make sure you have adequate USB power for it. This means you must plug it into either the computer (assuming it is a desktop) or a POWERED USB hub.

USB drives work well at low speed, even if the power is marginal. But, when MakeMKV starts spinning them up to max, they need more current, and a shared USB hub is not going to provide that.

Some drives require a dual-head cable be plugged into two powered ports to run at full speed, but newer ones get along with a single port.... so long as it has full USB spec power available.

The first drive was a Samsung SE-506BB/TSBD 6X USB2.0 External Slim Blu-ray, the second LG WH16NS40 Super Multi Blue Internal SATA, same problem.

There are definitely some "false files", for lack of better words, on the disc, files that prevent the entire disc from being dumped. Attempting to make a full backup or copy titles that appear to contain an extra 10G can run endlessly and fail to allow I/O interrupts, crashing badly when the copy cannot exit.

Since this only happens in MakeMKV, however, it makes me feel this may relate to how MakeMKV is accessing the drive vs Bytecopy.
