The program can't find any usable optical drives

Post by codefast » Sat Aug 29, 2015 10:24 am

Hi,

Just installed 1.9.5 and tried to start it up. The program starts, but says "The program can't find any usable optical drives"

This is the same drive I've used before, though maybe not with Yosemite (it's been almost a year since I've ripped something on this setup).

The last version I had installed was a 1.8.x series version of the app. OS X is able to mount the disc fine, oddly enough.

Any suggestions on where to look? I turned on debug, and this is all I get in the console view at the bottom of the main window:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.9.5 darwin(x86-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as /Users/username/MakeMKV_log.txt
DEBUG: Code 32 at i{9Z/4Ic*bM5W'`\:213139736
The program can't find any usable optical drives.
Thanks.

Ah, fixed it by moving to a different USB hub (from an external USB hub to the one built into the Apple display... weirdly it worked).

Damn, still getting errors, though different ones this time. I tried plugging into the mac directly, as well, but no luck. Does anyone know what this is about:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.9.5 darwin(x86-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as /Users/username/MakeMKV_log.txt
Optical drive "BD-RE MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ260 1.00d" opened in OS access mode.
Backing up disc into folder "/Users/username/Movies/backup/DR_NO_BD"
Loaded 267 SVQ file(s)
Processing BD+ code, please be patient - this may take up to few minutes
Processing BD+ code using generic SVQ from builtin/00000.svq
BD+ code processed, got 1 FUT(s) for 1 clip(s)
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.

One last bit of info on this - I tried to rip a disk I've backed up properly in the past, and it also failed with the same error message, with the same debug messages in the log. Appreciate any help on this. Seems like something is goofed up in my setup or the new version of MakeMKV. The drive has worked on one of these movies in the past.

Thanks!

If the drive is powered by the USB port, make sure that there is sufficient power on the port that you plugged into. Ports ON the computer have more power available than ports on hubs, UNLESS the hub has its own power supply.

Some USB drives come with a special cable that allows them to pull power from two ports at the same time. That cable is useless on a non-powered hub.

The drive does have external power, and the power supply is plugged in. Are you just suggesting that as a thing to check, or is the error code/debug info listed pointing to that as a problem?

Thanks!

Suggesting it as a probable problem - when dealing with USB drives on any operating system, power becomes an issue when MakeMKV spins them up to full speed.

The actual debug codes will have to wait for Mike - he will know what they mean.

Odd. I'm seeing the same error (also a powered external reader - not USB bus power) - but even with debug turned on - this is all the debug I got:

Debug log started at Mon Aug 31 18:52:08 2015 , written by MakeMKV v1.9.5 darwin(x86-release)
Using 524544KB for read cache.
001005:0000 MakeMKV v1.9.5 darwin(x86-release) started
001004:0000 Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as /Users/username/MakeMKV_log.txt
005042:0000 The program can't find any usable optical drives.

I don't even see the debug code you got in your first post.

Was working fine with my previous version (1.9.2).

Update - disconnected-reconnected the USB port it was in - and the problem went away - sorry - I posted too soon here.
