The program can't find any usable optical drives

Post by paradanglers »

I know this error has been reported previously but the fix of "running under administrator privileges" isn't working for me.

I'm running windows 7 with a Pioneer BDR-206 Bluray drive and have run MakeMKV previously (and successfully) on numerous occasions

Any help would be gratefully recieved

It may seem silly, but... Have you reset the machine (as in power-off, or hit the RESET button after shutdown) and tried it again?

Sometimes, the operating system loses track of the optical drives, and won't report them to MakeMKV. Sometimes even the BIOS will say there is no drive, until all the hardware resets. A simple reboot doesn't reset all the hardware.

I had tried but sadly that didn't work either. The drive is being seen by the BIOS & windows but interestingly an attempted firmware upgrade for the drive also failed due to "available target is not found". I'm guessing I've either got a faulty drive or a something to do with certain aspects of windows recognising it, although it seems to manage everything else I ask of it without any trouble (so far!).

Another test would be to try it with something like VLC to see if it recognizes it with a DVD inserted. I'm not sure if VLC actually requires the target of "open a DVD" to be a physical device... Haven't tested it.
