Are read errors always down to the disk or drive?

Post by jCurve »

Hi,

I'm looking at ripping a number of Blu Rays to avoid kids damaging the disks and all sources point to this being the best software to use. what i am finding so far however is that all 4 of the Blu Rays i have tested on are giving me: Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:READ RETRIES EXHAUSTED or similar, what appear to be read related errors. All the searching I have done here seems to point to this either being a dirty or poorly manufactured disk or a failing drive. The highest encryption I have hit is AACS v31 on 'Frozen' and FYI I am running OS X 10.10.4 MakeMKV v1.9.5.

The thing is these discs have no scratches and play back just fine on the same drive using Mac Blu Ray Player.

I know from past experience that DVD's have thrown up read errors as programs try to read past scrambled data and can't due to encryption. Is there a difference in the reading for this program than there is reading to play the disc that makes it more sensitive to manufacture faults.

Are we 100% sure this is not an encryption issue?

Just in passing. every DVD has gone through without fail. it is just the Blu Rays

Thanks for your time

If the log shows SCSI errors, that's what the operating system reported to MakeMKV when it requested the read. Based upon the "retries exhausted", MakeMKV asked its normal 5 times before logging the error.

If you could, please post the debug log with the specific error codes and any debug messages, so that Mike can have better information to work with.

As 00883 seems to be the problem child i've tried to do a direct copy of that file to the desktop and hit:

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “00883.m2ts” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)

I also tried disk imaging in toast which failed and I am currently trying disk utility but i don't hold out much hope. The only success I had was with 'Brorsoft' which did it but it took about 5 hours. Even though MakeMKV is having read issues with the disks I have tested I can see it will be far faster when it does so i know what i'd rather pay for.

I noticed this:

Code: Select all

It's highly recommended to install DASPI kernel extension to improve performance.
Mike has generally discouraged people from installing the DASPI extension on OS X unless the program reports it would help... In your case, it looks like it might.

To date, I have not seen MakeMKV report a copy-protection-related problem as a SCSI failure to read error. That doesn't mean it can't happen, but I have never seen it. When the operating system says there is an error, it's just reporting what the drive said. You might see key exchange errors on drives that have been hit by AACS, but many of those turn out to be disk read issues.

Lots of words to say, "This is why I have a can of Pledge and a soft cotton cloth on hand next to the ripping computer". :)
