MakeMKV idles on Kaamelott DVD
MakeMKV idles on Kaamelott DVD
Hello everybody,
I recently decided to rip all of my six seasons of Kaamelott (french TV show) from DVD. I successfully ripped all the 6 seasons but the 1st DVD of the 2nd season. I am using MakeMKV 1.7.10 x64 for Windows.
I tried different things:
- Selecting everything (video track, audio #1 (AC3 2.0), audio #2 (AC3 5.1), subtitles): title0 fails to save after a very short time (see log file MakeMKV_log_1.txt) ;
- Selecting all but the subtitle: title0 grows until approx. 140 Mo then stops, MakeMKV progress bar stops growing, but consumes more RAM until it reaches a few hundreds Mo (see log file MakeMKV_log_2.txt) ;
- Selecting only the video track: title 0 is saved OK but contains only half of the video (EXACTLY half of it: 25 episodes on a total of 50) ;
- Doing the same thing with AnyDVD HD launched: same result ;
I can rip the DVD by copy/pasting it from Windows explorer to my computer and it plays perfectly fine with VLC. But the VOB files seem to have strange length attributes and play badly when opened individually (although it works fine when opening VIDEO_TS.IFO). If I try to make the mkv file from the folder structure on my computer, I get the same result. I even tried using FixVTS on the folder structure on my computer without more luck. I also tried cleaning the DVD...
With a different program (DVDfab) I can rip the DVD to MKV but the audio suffers a progressive delay (from 0 to 1.5 sec after 3 hours of runtime), and I just can't do anything about it.
BUP and IFO files are all stricly identicals in size and content.
I attached 2 log files of my 1st & 2nd tries (ripping everything then everything but the subtitle track). I had to stop the process after a while for the 2nd though, as it seemed to hang.
I can link a Test Dump file if requested but it may require me some time (and I can only do it if it works on Windows).

Re: MakeMKV idles on Kaamelott DVD
Perhaps too obvious, but you haven't stated whether you've tried cleaning both the disc and your reader/burner.
If you have, it would seem that you have a damaged disc - and, if possible, return it to the place of purchase in exchange for a new replacement disc...

Unfortunately that's the only way. Please do a test dump for the title that fails and send per instructions at /onlinehelp/testdump.html . Please put a link to this topic in email as well.madmox wrote:I can link a Test Dump file if requested but it may require me some time (and I can only do it if it works on Windows).
Re: MakeMKV idles on Kaamelott DVD
Ok, I uploaded a test dump file and emailed the link at support@makemkv.com (http://www.mediafire.com/?jxcu780m2v44as1).
As stated in my first post, I tried to clean the DVD with no success. Recently I tried to clean the disc burner, same result.
It seems a bit strange that another software (DVDfab) succeeds (minus the audio progressive delay) in ripping the DVD to mkv if the problem originates from the disc. I also get the audio lag with the 2nd DVD of the same season with DVDfab, whereas MakeMKV has no problem with this one.
Anyway, I know DVD wear can produce strange behaviors with rippers, so I just wait for a response from the support team.

Re: MakeMKV idles on Kaamelott DVD
DVDFab was, and may still be, notorious for invisibly skipping over disc errors (replacing them with zeros, IIRC). Many times this results in a viable, but less than perfect backup.another software (DVDfab) succeeds (minus the audio progressive delay)
Other similar programs do not skip errors...
Re: MakeMKV idles on Kaamelott DVD
I have the exact same problem with the same disc, I had to rip using dvd decrypter with 0 retries and ignore read error, VTS_02_1 was unreadable by most apps I tried, only cloneDVD2 was able to somewhat fix it using some kind of voodoo, this vob now works, I just have the first chapter twice as long as it's supposed to be, first half being black with audio and second half being the actual chapter with audio in sync. I'll just have to cut a few minutes at the beginning when transcoding.
I should mention the dvd is new and perfect (physically anyway), it's interesting to note that it's made by warner bros thou.

Re: MakeMKV idles on Kaamelott DVD
Very difficult to know if you have the "exact same problem", without the debugging information generated by MakeMKV. It is quite likely you are having a completely different issue, give then number of versions and months that have gone by since this thread was started 2 years ago.

Four years later, and I have the same disk with what sounds like the same problem. I'm running version 1.9.3 on Linux.
Handbrake and Brasero both fail to rip this disk as well.
I'll see about making a debug log.

Re: MakeMKV idles on Kaamelott DVD
I'm afraid that I get the same result on 1.9.4
Isn't it weird that they would have a successful exploit on just one disk out of a whole set?
