I am FAR from a BR expert however, I can tell you that DVD drives that were advertised with their TOP SPEEDS but looking at the fine print the stated speed was only achievable on Single Layer Media... DL rips (aka 99.99% of the movie DVDs) while still 'fast' were not being ripped at the advertised TOP SPEED. Maybe this has changed but it was certainly the case a few years ago.

I have a 4x Blu-Ray drive that actually reads at 4x with some Blu-Rays using MakeMKV. When it does reach this speed I get about 10 consecutive 'optical drive reads faster than hard drive can write, consider a faster hard drive' messages. This is with a 2.33Ghz 2007 MacBook Pro and 7200rpm internal hard drive.

Do you get this message?
Can you post a link to the drive you're using?

Where do you see this message about the hard drive? I don't get that message.

The message is in the main window of MakeMKV when processing a Blu-Ray.
If you are only reading at a maximum of 3x than you probably won't get the message.
What Mac are you running and do you have a 5400rpm, 7200rpm or SSD hard drive?

The website you linked is not working right now but of these two drives what one does yours look like?

I use the slim looking one from Panasonic that I got on eBay for about $120

I have the one pictured at the bottom but there are 2 versions of this, I have the one with LightScribe.

I have a Mac Pro (2006) and using 7200rpm SATA2 (3Gbps) drive.

I have seen that message now but only shows up if Log debug messages is enabled, which isn't by default.

Than the only way to get the full read speed out of MakeMKV would be to upgrade to an Intel SSD or VelcoiRaptor
Basically any high end SSD or 10,000+ rpm HDD.

I am not convinced it's a HDD issue since it appears when reading at only 4MB/s!

I am quite certain 7200rpm drives can write at 25+MB/s. The error which really isn't an error needs correcting since it's misleading.

Also this message appears when ripping DVD's as well as Bluray discs.

The 1.5.2 version has improvements in related code, please check if it makes any difference.
